Oops, one punch too many...so much for the "work around" for the bose hu problem.

Yeah, about 3 months ago I learned how to fix my bose hu when the speakers cut out....A solid punch to the side that has sound...(So if you lose left, hit the right side of the console, etc.)

Well this has worked well, although the frequency of the cut out did grow (which is kinda obvious if you think about it). Anywho, on the ride into work the combination of me being 15 min late and the 2nd cut out in 10 min lead to a swift punch between the ac vents and cd audio cut out completey =)

Radio works fine, just no cd sound...I am out of warrenty so unfortunaly I have to go where others have gone into the after market for a hu.

I quickly searched the site and found answers of what to get, what to use for the steering wheel controls and trip comp...

The one thing I cant find is if I can in any way shape or form keep the in dash 6-disc changer. Its bad enough that i have to reach into my own pocket to fix a bose/clarion/nissan probelm, but If I have to lose the 6 disc (which I love) I may go postal....

=)

any advice?

The 6-disc changer is part of the actual BOSE HU so you can't save it if you replacing the BOSE with an aftermarket unit. How about you get a HU with MP3 capability so you can put more than 6 cd's worth of songs on one CD? Just a suggestion.

get something that has mp3 capability at the very least. that way you can have many more songs on 1 cd. kenwood, alpine, pioneer are good headunits.

Anyone have a hu that...

1. Looks good in our dash
2. has mp3 capability (as suggested by the peeps in this thread)
3. Wont break the bank?

If anyone could post a approx cost of replacing the hu and keeping the trip/radio controls working. I would appreciate it.

Im sure many of you have had to go aftermarket...

What did you buy? Do you like it? would you reccomend it? etc, etc.

pioneer has some great performing and looking models, in the 6xxx and 7xxx model lines. jvc is also awsome, i dont know what their models are any more. go to best buy, or circuit city, or whatever is in your area, and pick something you like. everybody has a different preference on what they like as far as looks go for their aftermarket hu.
personally, i like the round **** for volume control, but a lot of people like a rocker up-down button for that. most mp3 in-dash palyers, have a four-way rocker switch to go up-down in folders(albums), and left-right to switch between songs.
all mp3 hus read the id3 tag or the song name, so it will display on the screen.
you can get a good jvc or pioneer as cheap as $125-150, and nicer ones with organic lcd screens for about $200-300.
the best way to find one is to go to a big store, and find your model, then find the best price, either online or in a retail store.

I've always liked Alpines.

To keep your steering wheel controls, use this adapter.

Note: Crutchfield's prices are really high compared to some other places but they have good info. Shop around using Pricegrabber.com or Shopping.com to find better prices.

Thanks Txt, and everyone.

Anything wrong with these approx $150 Models?

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-08OQ2IA...0&I=130DEHP470

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-08OQ2IA...0&I=500CDE9843

Also, I assume I need the wiring harness for the HU which is like 35$ and then I need the additional harness which is href'ed above for 65-70 to use the steering wheel? Or do I just need one?

The remote (if included) will still also work correct?

I am really a audio newb and was very happy with the sounds from the factory P.O.S....No need to get anything better as far as I am concered.

Is there a specific reason I should look at the 250$ models compared to the 150$'s?

Thanks again all!

Nothing wrong with the lower priced models. Main difference is quality and type of display. You'll need the wiring harness that lets you use the stock BOSE speakers. Crutchfield recommends the stuff you'll need based on the make and model of car you select. You'll need both the harness plus the adapter for the steering wheel controls. The wireless remote should still work fine.

Quick Q on the mp3 player capability.

A few years back when mp3 players in hu were just catching on my roommate got one. He ended up taking it back because the time to switch from song to song with a mp3 disc was noticably longer than on cds. It was hard to just scan through your disc to find something you wanted to play.

Like I said this was a few years back, has this been corrected? Has anyone had any experience with this?

A disc of 200 songs is only nice if you can browse through them in a reasonable manner.

Thanks!

You should be able to actually organize your songs in folders and navigate that way. Burn them on your CD in major letter groups (A-G, H-M etc) or genre or however you want. Most CD burning programs allow this option.

its no longer than a song on cd. switching between folders may take a little longer, but it's very fast too. way faster than physically changing cds i our in-dash disk changer.

very true, i organize my mp3 cds this way. put differnet albums in it's own folder:
the wall
dark side of the moon
wish you were here
etc, etc...
the coolest part about more expencive mp3 players, is multi line organic displays.
they show the album name, and the song name, and play time.
i will try to take a good pic of this on a jvc hu in my girl's camry, to show what i mean. or you could check it out at any best buy. (best try)...

A friend of mine had an MP3 unit when they first came out, and the time between songs took forever. Also when he started the car it took about 30 seconds for the HU to read into and start playing songs. That's all gone with newer units, though. I never had any trouble out of my blaupunkt ($130) in the maxima.
