Buying a 5th gen?

Hey guys. i curently own a 1992 max but im buying a new car. for a while I wanted to get a 4th gen but now im looking into 5th-5.5 gens or whatever they are. Im going to be a college kid and my budget is about 9 grand and i was looking on mabye a 2000 with say 100k on it? I also want to get a 2000 because i hear the rear seats fold down and this is the first time the max has had fold down rear seats which will make surfing up hear in newengland alot easier. I figured the best bang for my buck would be to try and find a max with a bran new clutch seeing as how i would probly be replacing one if it had the orginal clutch. Any major repairs i can expect with a 5th gen with that many miles. Im pretty sure u cannot get the 3.5 in the 2000 but that does not really bother me cause im very familar with the legendary 3.0 and even tho the 5th gens are bigger than the 4th, they are faster correct, as far as quatermile times go. Any input would help on buying my new max

Glad that you are choosing 5th gen, here are some other advantages of 5th gen over 4th gen:

Better handling, higher skid pad numbers while having more ground clearance, roomer, and, finally, it looks better.

Common issure that I know of are:

MAF problems (like 60% of all owners had to replace them) – test drive the car for a while and then scan is with OBDII code reader at AutoZone
Variable intake not working properly (the intake manifold lets more air in at 5k and up) – make sure that you get your revs over 5k while you are test driving the car, if you don’t see a noticeable increase of power it is broken.

Good luck finding a good car!

edition:

Just to make you decision a bit easier, I got my SE 2000 for 9700, had 73k miles on it, one owner, clean carfax, never moded, from dealer in Virginia.

There are lots of very good deals out there and you'll find it if you have the time to search. I spent a good month looking at different websites and lots to find the right car for me. I got very lucky when a friend of a friend offered me his maxima. I got a 2000 SE with 95k miles on it for 7 thousand dollars. So for your budget of 9k you can find something even better.

That is a great deal, im looking for something very simliar , like someone looking to get rid of there max quick. I love those 6 spoke 17s and they can be found on 2000 maximas. Maybe only on the fully loaded ones?

i love my 5th gen but doing it all over again id go for a 98 or 99. just a bit samller, more handeling potential and basically just as fast as 00 and 01. with the 5th gens watch out for mafs, varialble intakes, and rotors. the interior is no doubd better and if u need the seats to fold down then theres ur answer, good luck. i guess i overpaid for mine but it was perfectly mint with all options. 00 73k for 11,000

If you're willing to travel a bit, here is a 5th Gen GXE trim with less than 50,000 miles in your price range. http://www.autoshopperonline.com/vie...FromSearch=Yes

Moral of the story is there should be plenty of lower mileage 2000-2001 Maximas out there in your price range. Don't settle for a higher mileage one.

I currently own a 92 SE, a 99GLE and a 01 GLE. They are all excellent. The 5 Gens are larger and feel larger (FSTB & RSB help immeasureably). The 4th Gen is larger but the handling is a bit more nimble than an unmodified 5th Gen. My 92 has recently been fitted with a JDM VE (4500 mi ago) and generally been rebuilt with new struts/cartridges, window regs, CV Axles, condenser, 134A conversion, poly filled mounts, 4 Gen wheels, stereo, etc. (has 101K Mi and was off the road for 5 yrs due to a burst radiator hose - nice garage project for a few months). I like it for the smaller size, feel, and visibility but, the later models are a bit more solid feeling although not more maneuverable. I think speed is comparable among them,

do yourself a favor...I learned my lesson and I WILL NEVER think about buying another nissan. WORST service in the industry and they are not as reliable as they used to be. I seriously want to sell my damn car.

I love my car for the way it is...but the problems Nissan is giving me blows!!! I dont mind spending repair money if I have to but it is a big hassle for leaving my ride there for 3-4 days every week for the past 4 week and BS you "cant duplicate your problem"...AND makes your car run worse after some big money for repairs. After 4 blown MAFs, 2 TBs and a ECU and still have problems running for a car thats only 2 yrs old with full care...I just have no love for Nissan...unless their service change for the better.

Take out the m/p and I bet your MAF will live a longer healthier life .. Or reinforce it with some gromets to smooth out the vibrations, (Courtesy Puppetmaster) Not sure hwat or why the TB's went out or the ECU .. but those (ECU/TB) problems seem a bit rare. ..

BTW, My 03 is almost 3 years old .. 10/02 prod. date.

Most of your mods are exterior .. Shoulda just bought headers, ported your airbox and called it a day.

I've owned 5.5 gen and both have been extremely reliable. I've always believed when you start modding your car you open it to problems. Oh yeah Honda and Toyotas reliablity is so hot either. With any car you take your risks but i think that the 5.5 gen is the last of the well built maximas......PERIOD!!!!!!

Good lucking finding a 5th Gen with under 100K with a new clutch. Unless the car has been ragged on, there may have been no need to replace the clutch so soon. Just a warning, be careful what you wish for! Don't buy a car that someone else has beat on like a rented mule.
