bracket under car...

Can this bracket be removed? is it there for the exhaust or something else? my exhaust is vibrating on it now and even with o-ring clamps around the hangers it still will touch it...

After my header install I had the same problem. I just put in shorter exhaust hangers to hold the pipes further away, Now it never touches. If that don't work put some washers inbetween the bracket and the car to space it down but don't remove it strengthens the body of the car

mine has been over for over a year. i tried the method of lowering it by using longer bolts and quite a few washers. that worked for a while until the emissions inspector made a mistake and bent it upwards. i removed it and have no issues.

you can remove it, and it is suggested to so that the pipes can clear. 2 maxes no crossmember, no issues.

You don't think it's there for a reason? It's a body support, Works like a strut bar for the center of your chassi. I reccomend not being lazy and finding a better way to solve the problem. Remember you drive a nice Maxima not a POS honda

man, that hurts my feelings. i guess i should go take that vtec banner off the windshield. remember, you as i drive a maxima not a ferrari. many of the people here are not pushing it hard enough to feel a 3 foot exhaust support beam missing.

My Bad! No pun intended, I just feel that it's a small enough problem that he can find an easy fix other than taking it off. I agree it wont really make any noticable difference to him or the way the car feels but I'm sure it's there for a good reason. Maby it helps keep the center of the car from cracking in halfe in an accident(LOL) I don't know but I don't like to mess with stuff that has to do with the structure of my car.

The real reason it is there is in the event of an exhaust pipe breaking...so the pipe doesn't drag on the ground or fall off. It may or may not strengthen the frame, but with the noodle frame the maxima has, it can't hurt. There is never a reason to "un-stiffen" the subframe of the car, even if you can't "feel" a difference.

I had the same problem with exhaust hitting it, and there are 2 EASY things you can do:

1. put a hose clamp around the exhaust hangars and tighten it up to pull the exhuast up a bit

2. put 4 washers (with longer bolts) above the bracket to push it down an inch.

I did these two things and never had a bang since (even when autocrossing, which pushes the exhaust all over the place)

1. I have o-ring clamps around all of the hangers and it still touches.

2. If I use washers it will only hang lower... I have my car pretty slammed in the summer on my D2's, all I need is for that thing to hang even lower (insert huge scrapping sound).

I think it is best to just take it off, I never really push my car that hard and I dont autocross. thanks for all the input guys.

From the condition of the cross member, it doesn't appear that you've scraped it yet, so lowering it 1/2-1" won't hurt I would imagine.
