i know you have a test pipe, headers, and full cattman exhaust. which is similar to a setup i'm going for (VQ30, y pipe, test pipe, stock b, cattman muffler)... how does it sound to you?
sounds like a good plan to me...however, judging from yer setup..it seems like you want to go for performance? I say go with intake, ypipe, test pipe, bpipe, stock muff....the bpipe gives the most hp out of the catback exhaust....the stock oem muff does a wonderful job of flowing the maxima gases....and u also mentioned u want something really classy? i'm not sure but i've seen a few stock muff maxes with aftermarket muffler tips...and it looks great...maybe u can remove yer muffler, polish it up with metal polisher, then get the tips installed so it blends in very well....

Thanks joel!

00maxse - it sounds great! it is loud tho...it took me awhile to get use to it...let me warn u, u definitely have to turn up the radio now in order to hear it...hehe...other than that, i love how it sounds...especially when u let off the throttle...it gives off a loud POP...say your rolling in 1st gear and jump quickly to 3k and let off instantly...it will give off a race-car like POP...sounds very nice and all the locals in my area keep askin me if i'm turbo

Summary for those of you who don't read whole threads:

1. The stock exhaust from the cat back is not that restrictive.

2. If you don't want to buy a complete catback exhaust for some reason, replacing the b-pipe will produce more gains than replacing the muffler (the stock muffler flows pretty well).

3. Replacing the stock muffler with the Cattman rear section will produce a sexy sound. The Frankencar rear section will also sound different from stock, but most people believe that it is not as deep or "throaty" as the Cattman.

4. Get a y-pipe (2000/2001) or headers (2002/2003) if you're really looking for gains from an exhaust system mod. The exhaust system is much more restrictive before the main cat than it is after the main cat. Opening up the exhaust at the rear will only give you small gains if you forget to open up the exhaust at the front.

yeah, i'm the only one around my area with a non stock 5th gen and i want a mean sound. i heard your clip, and if i decide to get cattman, i think it should sound similar to your setup, minus the b pipe, which isn't MUCH is sound? i already have the test pipe also uninstalled tho. i bet it drones on the highway, but where is the exhaust really loud while driving normally, not WOT.

I have found on my set-up (HS headers, HF Catt, Cattman Cattback) it drones between 2100-2600rpms. Before and after it is pretty quite in the car.

I wouldn't exactly say it will sound similiar....only becuz of two things...

1. I know headers vs ypipe is a totally different sound...I use to have a ypipe on my 4th gen...didn't sound nearly as nice as full equal length headers do on my 5th gen...

2. The bpipe plays a role in how the exhaust will sound too....you said you wanted to have a mean sounding max rite? I'm sure investing in a resonated bpipe would help create that sound you are looking for...

so in conclusion, there is no substitution of the FULL HEADERS+FULL EXHAUST setup (especially equal length headers)....i'm not sayin yer route is bad....but im just sayin don't be upset if it doesn't sound nowhere as good as u thought it would be...

yeah i hear you, essentially, as long as my car doesn't sound like just an exhaust system thrown on there, i'll be fine. i want a "what the hell is in that car" sound lol you dig? something that sounds deep and strong rather than just hi pitched sounds like civic exhausts. hopefully y pipe, test pipe and cattman rear section will offer me that. oh, and intake will make it slightly louder perhaps.

Magnaflow aren't bad, but they can be pricey. You'll probably be pleased with the results if you get the rest of the piping done well and if you can find a good price on the muffler.

Its a Highflow Catt, the car sounds mean as Hell. I get busted on by my brother and his friends for having a Jap car all the time (they are diehard american muscle fans) and even they cannot believe how mean it sounds.

I RARELY get a popping from my exhaust, I attribute that to the Highflow Catt, I HATE exhaust popping. I was going to get a test pipe, however my exhaust is loud enough and I feared popping.

yeah, i'm scared of popping, and not really sure if my set up with cattman will pop. test pipe... hmm more than likely with test pipe and y pipe... prolly will end up popping. but i want a mean sound too. did you ahve to get used to the sound or was it "damnnnn" from the beginning. what car can you say it's comparable to? i know, prolly zero cars lol

I had to get used to the interior noise, Unless you want to drive yourself crazy get sound deadening as well for the trunk. The maxima has quite a bit of dead space in the trunk and not a lot of factory sound killer. The problem is that the increased noise just resonates throughout the car from the trunk. I am in the process of installing sound deadening and it is getting much better from just a little work.

If I were to compare it.... I would have to say a G35C but deeper and a little louder.

I have the Stillen intake, Random tech Hi-flow cat and cattman rear section (cough* which I got for $200 cough) an it sounds great..Basically the same sound as only the intake but amplified with the muffler...In my case I dont have funds for headers and I have an 03' so I'm thinkin y pipe and now from this thread..which has been really helpful...I will add the cattman b pipe to boot..I agree with upstatemax to keep you OEM exhaust unless its falling off but ....In terms of looks, the cattman muffler is so purrty....

I have a Greddy Evo catback. From experience, would you say the evo is louder or the cattman?

Also for the 00-01 people, what y pipe would you guys recommend?

cattman is fairly quiet compared to most aftermarket mufflers. it's designed to sound well with y pipes and perhaps headers? yeah my muffler is in almost perfect shape. but i just hate the looks of my muffler and in love with the damn cattmans, looks powerful lol. 350 for a muffler is expensive so yeah, might just keep my stock catback and see how it sounds with my test pipe, y pipe combo (test pipe being put in as i type!)
