I bought one from a junkyard for $50. Took me less than 20 minutes to replace. You have to take off your glove compartment. It's behind that. There's two screws at the latch, then 4: one on each corner. Pretty simple to remove. Once you get to it, there's three screws, a plug and a small hose holding the blower in. You might as well replace the HEPA filter while you're in there.

Was the install a success? Do you have the p/n that was ordered from AutoZone?

I talked to the parts guy here in Austin, TX and he didn't have the success your guy did there in Corpus. He did carry blower motor made by Siemens p/n PM2729 for a 2000 Pathfinder which coincidentally I heard TimW say was the same part as what was needed for the Maxima.

Spoke with DaveB and he quoted me around $160 a few months back but ran out of money and would really like to get this thing fixed.

ok i got the part from autozone and brought it to my house installed it and it sitll ditn work...turned out my original blower motor was working fine it was really just the "resistor" in my maxima... lucky enough the guys at autozone took back my part since i kinda know the guy from there and i got fully refunded. Ithen went to nissan and asked what it could be, they told me it was teh resistor and offered me to buy the part, i did buy it and came home to install it...i bought one for my sisters 96 max and my 00 maxima. the guy sold me two "different" resistors supposebly so i came home installed them...my sisters 96 worked fine, took less than 5 minutes installing. i tried installin my part on my 00 max and it wouldnt even fit, i figured the guy gave me te wrong part on accident so the next day i wetn back and asked him about it. The parts and service guy didnt kno what i was talking about he thought it would fit, i figured he would tell me that so before i wetn to nissan i had taken off the old "resistor" on my car and brought it in to him to show him the resistor he gave me was different then my stock one.... he didnt even recognize the part and had to ask another service man to help which quickly corrected the first salesman and explained to both of us that the 2000 maxima calls that part a "amplifier" for the a/c. So he then gave me the correct "amplifier" part and i installed it in the parking lot at nissan before i left to make sure i wouldnt get jewed around again and it worked perfectly fine. So this is a long explanation of what happened , to answer your reply , I didnt need a blower motor after all, if you were gettin the same problem as me, you might hav ethe same issue and need only the amplifier and not resistor, if thats the case im sure youll be happy because the amplifier is cheaper than a new blower motor. If infact you actually do need a new blower motor then just go to autozone and ask for a blower motor for a "your year" nissan maxima. They will more htan likely have to special order it like they did with me, shippin should be free at autozone it usually is on stuff like that it was for me. Dont get that pathfinder one, im not sure if it is the same motor but regardless autozone should be more professional enough to look up what motor number/part fits ur year of maxima. Its not any kind of knowledge one autozone has over another, all their computers have the same stuff so the guy you went to probally was new or didnt know how to work the computer, just go back or go to another autozone and ask again. The install is really simply takes like 30 minutes with the removal of dash and everything, no more than a hour if you take your time and since its your first time. I hope i helped ya if not just write me back , this is gettin too long though ha

My blower fan started making a loud grinding noise on my 2001 maxima. I pulled my dash off (first timer) and confirmed that it was the blower motor that has to be replaced. I have to order one, so I put the dash back on for now. Ever since my airbag warning light flashes and doesn't go off. I know I hooked the wires bask up properly when I reassembled the dash. I tried the reseting procedure I found on this site but that didn't work. Any ideas?

Did you unplug that yellow plug in the dash? I dont think you are supposed to touch that. There is a way of detaching that from the glove box without unplugging it.

Yes I did. I unplugged the wire, while the key out, to get access to the blower. Once I was working on the blower I turned the key to on so I could examine the blower. When I was done, I think I reconnected the yellow wires while the key was still on (oops). I could have screwed something there eh?

Just to confirm, to reset the air bag light on a 5th Gen. you can follow the same procedure as the 4th gen (push plunger 7 times within 7 seconds, close door and start car).

Thanks for your help.

I fixed the airbag light by doing the following procedure that I found on another site:

1) turned key on and waited until the airbag light went off (7 secs)
2) Immediately turned key to off
3) Waited 5 seconds
4) Repeated steps 1 through 3 an additional two times
5) Turned key to On and airbag light was flashing much slower.
6) Turned key to off then started car. Light does not flash any longer.

Hope this helps someone else. Now I have to replace that damn blower!!

5th Gen blower resistor

I replaced the blower motor (had been grinding) when it stopped functioning but it began to intermittently (only when outside temp over 50?) function after replacement. I pulled the resistor out and the whole surface appeared to be covered with a layer of corrosion. I took some sand paper and cleaned the surface and reinserted it. It seems to be functioning OK now. Am I just fooling myself into thinking it's fixed?

I think so. the metal fin is to cool the resistor. If the fin got too corroded, it wouldn't conduct heat and the resistor would burn up. Until the resistor burned up, it would work.

What you probably have is the blower motor going bad. When it doesn't run, try tapping on it with a hammer or something.

That's what you get when you buy "universal fit" parts. They don't fit without work.

You need to connect the red wire to the white/blue stripe wire
Connect the black wire to the blue/white stripe wire.
