whats the best setting on illuminas?

Hey guys, I have h&r springs with tokico hp's and I have had problems with the hp's blowing so I went with the illuminas which I will put on tommorow. What is the best setting for the front and rear? Not too stiff and not too soft, just right.

I mean...it's pretty subjective to how you drive, how good the roads are there, etc.

I'd suggest setting the rear at 3 and then trying 3-4 on the front....I guess.

I usually run 4 rear and 4/5 front on street and 5 rear, 4 front in autocross.

I though if the setting is harder in the rear than in front this may tend to understeer

I have the same setup. I ran 5 all the way around for a while, then tried going back to a smoother ride, but I couldn't stand it for some reason. Better ride, yes, but I think I preferred the better handling

Well thats because you have all those nice smooth roads down in VA. I think they make some out of concrete down there. Great driving state, except for the whole State Po' and the the anti-radar detector thing. If you think it is rough in spots come take a spin up here in frost heave country.

I would think that H&Rs would be "good" with the settings at 2-3... but there is no such thing as a "best setting". Like others have said, it depends on the conditions of the roads and your idea of what is "stiff" riding and what is "soft". Your settings also need to match the springs you have.

I have Progress springs and with my Illuminas at 3, I think its "soft" still and its only really "stiff" at 5. Mine are set at 4 all round now for daily driving, but when I go on long road trips its 3 all round or 4F 3R.

What ya need to do is to play around with settings and find one that YOU like, since your preference may differ from ours.

2-3 front, 3 rear

Daily driving to-from work I go 3 front and 3 rear. When I occasional drive into the city (Philadephia) where the roads are bad I put the fronts to 2 and leave the rear at 3 - with the fronts at 2, the initial bang from hitting a pothole is a bit softer up front. So 2-3 fronts, 3 rear for almost all of my driving. Maybe if I knew I was going to do a long distance drive or something on smooth highways i'd go higher than 3's, but since i've had the illuminas (3 weeks) no need to yet.

stiffening up the rear leads to oversteer, not understeer.

but, I obviously have other factors to consider with my setup, as I run a lower tie bar and RSB...those are the settings I have found that give me a close-to-balanced setup with just a small touch of oversteer at autocross, and then stiffen the front up for a little touch of understeer for street driving.

That is true, most of Va's roads are in good shape. Unfortunately, I work in Prince George County, Maryland - and the roads there are terrible. Plus, it's one of the most crime-ridden counties in the mid-Atlantic, so I tend to drive faster, bad roads or not, so as not to catch a bullet or get carjacked.

For the longest time I was running my H-techs with 3 in the front and 2 in the rear.

Today though, I changed the settings (after about a year, I think).

It seems as though the rear end was flopping around, like the struts had softened up. I expect that to happen over time, but not this soon. Of course, I do drive a lot.

Anyway, set the rears to 3 (still 3 in front) and was happier. Then got curious and set the rears to 4 and went for a test drive. I like 4 even better. So, that's what I'm sticking with now. I'm just glad that they are adjustable so I can make them stiffer as they get softer.

It’s interesting how all this suspension setup works. You set it too soft and your traction decreases because of the body roll. Set it too stiff and the weight gets transferred less evenly between inside and outside tires which also results in lowered grip. When the rear is set to a stiffer setting you are decreasing the body roll for the whole car but getting less even weight transfer only on rear tires.

Btw: handling will be better with softer settings if the roads are harsh. Stiffer settings will prevent tires from being in contact with the road 100% of the time.

Finally got to installing my illuminas and when I got to the rear passenger side, I noticed that the shock was missing the little adjuster on the top so I cant adjust the setting on it. Looks like I will be calling the people who sent it to me tommorow.
