Wheelspin and Wheel hop

Need help with this one. Whenever I accelerate hard enough to spin the tires, the car shakes vigorously. The car has about 85,000 km (50K miles) and the stock craptenzas are about worn out (thank god, I can't wait to get rid of them!!). I bought the car with 15,000 km and back then the tires would light up without any problems. I haven't had an alignment since I bought the car. Any idea what the problem is?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Replace the deathtenza's and maybe replace your motor mounts with the ES ones. Oh and get a stiffer suspension too and some new shocks (Illumina's).

Do you mean when my car was new (had brand new tires and motor mounts) it did not have the wheel hop?

I thought that that’s the way they designed them…

No. I don't mean that at all. When you upgrade the suspension, motor mounts, and tires it reduces the wheel hop. At least it did with mine.

definitely get motor mounts....it really stiffens up the front end and prevents the violent shaking....the power gets send directly to the ground now....with jelly filled stock mounts, the motor would just rock back & forth and cause all the ruckus...

how long did it take you to swap the motor mounts?

about 3-4hrs total....we had to take the motor mounts to a shop....and we left them there cuz they were very busy....if we had immediate access to them...then approximately 1.5hrs

Definetly get yourself some energy suspension motor mounts. I just had them installed on my 03 6speed with HLSD. Makes a HUGE difference in eliminating wheel hop.

Brian Catts sells them for around 86 bucks.

Note that you will get slightly more vibration from your engine when you have these. I dont mind though, I like a good butt massage!

just do the all-wheel-drive conversion. That should fix the wheel hop issue

lighter wheels will help as well...

My wheelhop was greatly reduced after I installed lowering springs.

totally forgot also - the lower tie bar almost eliminated my wheel hop entirely.

maybe true, but at least I don't have to put a quart of oil into my engine every couple of weeks

Starting to make me wish I had held out my cash for some SSR Competitions... mmm. Those G35c's are a little heavier than my stockers.

I have ES tranny and engine mounts, riding on H&R springs on stock shocks (80,000kms on it now). Tires are Hankook k104 235-35-19's.

I still get wheel hop after all said and done.

I don't know how you guys are driving/launching, but with the Max being a FWD vehicle with plenty of power, I don't think we can simply redline it in 1st and then slam it into 2nd and do the same and expect no wheel spin or hop.

Nealoc put it best:

Quote: I roll on the throttle and don't go WOT in 2nd, but I don't shift slow. You manipulate the throttle to limit your wheelspin such that you don't hurt your time. No one can tell you how to do it really, you have to get out there and try it again and again and see what gives you the best time.

Mine only happens when its wet out- i have hardly any traction in the rain and if i go over 3k RPM in 1st theyll start spinning. dry pavement i could get a good spin but when its wet they'll start shaking like crazy- is there any long term effects to that, like say the CV axles(mine are clicking now but all the time, not just on turns)

also remember the shocks are what dampen the suspension. no matter how stiff you make everything else, the wheels will still hop! the softer the springs and suspension bushings, the bigger the hop is going to be. but to prevent the oscillation (hop), you need some stiffer shocks.

And lower tier bars right?

I don't get any wheel hop, but then again I am not trying to launch the hell out of my car. Why are you guys launching your cars so hard. It's a family sedan!!!!

Then you got the wrong car!! I don't any issues with people modding there car, but when they except a family sedan to not have certain performance issue is beyond me. I just can't make my daily commuter car into some vibration/noise box!!!!!!It has to be comfortable and quick and that's what the max is!!!!

I dont have the wrong car. It is possible to alleviate wheel hop while still having a very reasonable daily driver. Sure, its not going to be a race car but I do not see mine as a family sedan... I see it as Nissan first saw it, a Four Door Sports Car

You guys realize that wheel hop is cause primarily by the control arms moving to the rear of the car repeatedly right? Motor mounts and stiffer shocks and springs help the issue but don't completely cure it. The only way to completely reverse this phenomenon is with traction bars that prevent the control arm from moving laterally front to back. JClaw makes 'em for the 4th gens.

Problem is the 4dsc as nissan labelled it back then didn't have the tq it does now so i don't think wheel hop was an issue then. I loved the 3rd gen maxima and in my opinion its the best max ever......!!!!!But it was still a family sedan

Install es poly control arm bushings. will help some with the wheel hop and above all makes the steering much tighter! I have place racing solid poly engine mounts,tein/illuminas, strut bar, and poly control arms , but i still get some wheel hop.everything mentioned does help though.
