best $500 i spent

got my Cattman Y-pipe on Monday, installed Monday night. got my Berk intake with Apexi yesterday, installed last night. the tone is good, not too loud, but mean (the rest of the exhaust system is stock)

i did some timings with a stopwatch (haha, laugh at me, but it gives me a pretty good idea of performance improvements). before intake and y-pipe I ran about 10.8 sec 0-60 (yeah, altitude is against me - 4500 ft.). today i was getting 9.5 sec. (DISCLAIMER: the test was done on an empty street with posted 60 mph speed limit). i will be going down to the coast (sea level) in a few weeks, so we'll see how it performs without altitude affecting it.

You will not be dissapointed at the gains from altitude reduction.

I am amaized every time I go back to San Diego from 5200 ft. You'll hit 60 in under 7 seconds.

auto civic here will run 0-60 in 14 sec. advantage to having turbo/sc - it doesn't care about altitude.

I have a berk, love it. awesome deep growl that I can't get enough of. I wasted a half of a tank of gas the first few days I had it because I mashed on the gas any chanc I got to hear it. I was driving to one of my classes around 10:00am one morning and I saw one of my co-workers on the highway. I stayed next to her for a second, then floored it. The next day at work, I asked if she liked the sound. she said, "it was funny, you were next to me an the VRROOOOOOM!"

did you get the y pipe installed at a shop??? I tried gettin mine installed and went to three places but two didn't have a torch so they said they wouldnt be able to get the bolts off the cat and out of the manifolds and the last place said it would be a 2-3 hour job. I'm thinkin of goin back there tomorrow but it'll cost be about $200.....Just wondering how your installation went and how much you paid. Thanks.

I can't wait to get my y pipe installed.....

I paid $0. I did it myself, in my garage in about 3 hours. All of the nuts came off without problem, but I live in a very dry climate, with little percipitation.

I brought my budget y-pipe to my local Meineke and they did it in about 30-45 minutes and charged me $60 for installation which I was fine with...it was pretty rusty under there in some places due to the wonderful New England weather.

Berk w/ Apexi = Heaven. I've had the chance to test out the intake's performance in the higher band, and 3rd gear sees an enormous improvement, granted the conditions are right (cool weather for the win!). From 80-110 my car stuck to a 5.5 gen like glue -- and then the 3.5 began to pull ahead of me, but I had person in the car recording and a whole bunch of equipment so I was heavier. But the 5.5 had an intake + y-pipe annd a 3.5. :P

Regardless, my intake did me well that day. You lose torque when you're just cruising around, but once that needle begins climbing past 4K RPM, you'll notice it climbs faster than it does without the intake -- since all of that power is up top. Can't wait to order my y-pipe soon. Wooo!

(P.S. I have footage of both runs, so please don't call me out on this, because I don't know how to cut out two 20 second clips from an 8 minute video and I'm not going to send it to anyone, either -- it's 110MB. We did have these races discussed over at NYCM, though, if you're looking for proof. The person who recorded the video can attest to how abnormaly quick my car is for a 3.0L with BTDC17 and an intake.)

That's strange because we live in the same climate (yours is probably even worse) and my bolts are shot. How many miles does your car have?

I feel just a little bit more on the high end. Love that sound to death though...

I once had a little fun with a 3.5 altima a few weeks back. I was going to be a little late for work and I was going around cars on the highway, not cutting anyone off or anything. I got to an open stretch of highway when I saw the altima follow me over for the third time. I punched it and I was slowly pulling away from him up to about 115 when I had to slow down for my exit. He passed slowly with his thumb up and I gave him a peace sign. It was an older guy and he yelled out, "Thats not stock, there is some sound there...thats not stock!!" I just yelled back that, "It's not!" and got off at my exit.

high altitude = less oxygen = less power no matter how much you cram it in.

Intakes are too loud for what they give. I'd rather improve on the stock design.

Has anyone noticed a slack in power in the lower rpm band with an aftermarket intake? Say from 0 to about 45 mph or 2,000 to 3,500 rpm?

If so, it would seem like the K&N filter is all you really need to help the engine see more air with the stock air box.

Yeah, with your headers and stage 2.5, you'd probably walk on me.

2.5 wont help because 80-110 there are no shifts ... but the headers will defintately help. I'd like to see a dyno of your car, since from a few of your psots, seems to b pretty potent. ..

0-45, that's 0-7000RPM as far as my car's concerned.

This does more than JUST a K&N

Well has anyone fully tested or answered the question of losing low end power with an intake? If so can anyone provide links? Or private message me.

I did the GAB on my girls 02 auto. Basically the car we drive for work everday, seemed to help a little.

I did, I installed Y-pipe at the same time as intake. no loss of low end.

Yeah, I've wanted to do a dyno for the longest time, because I do indeed feel my car is quite the freak. But I was curious, doesn't the VB mod effect downshifts too? I mentioned the VB mod because if you and I were to line up at a cruising speed of about 80 and then hammered it, the cars would downshift into 3rd, right?

They would, but I didn't notice any difference in behavior in downshifts w/ the VB mod.

Ahhh. I was going to get a stage 2 done, but man...at cruising speeds the shifts are so hard it feels like the car literally crashes into something. Definitely not tolerable for me. How do you get around in a 2.5? That's insanity! Hahah.

You learn to drive accordingly to where the 1-2 is not noticeable, myself and a few otehrs change our driving style to accomodate it ... It's not that hard to tailor the pedal to where it shifts nicely.
