OBD 2 Code Reader

I was thinking of getting one of these so I don't have to pay the dealer each time the SES light goes on. Plus it would be a neat toy to have. The latter probably being the main reason . There's a number of them on ebay fairly cheap but I don't know exactly what I need in terms of connectors. Also, some of them have CAN ability. Do I need this for my Max?

Thanks

I'm not sure about Canada, but all US vehicles since 1996 have to have the same
OBD II connector. I have an Equis OBD II. It sure comes in handy when the SES light comes on.

You could check with your local auto parts store...I'm sure they would know what type of connectors are used.

If you guys have AutoZone in Canada, they should be able to do it for free. If not, there’s a way to find out those codes without the scanner. I’m not sure exactly how but general procedure would be to turn some kind of screw under the dashboard (where you plug in the scanner) and watch SES light flash a curtain about of times. After that you just match that sequence with the table.

No Autozone in Canada. Does anyone know where you would plug in the reader?

Most connectors are right underneath the dash near the fuse panel. All OBII connectors are the same for U.S. model cars manufactured after 1996. Not sure about Canadian cars, though.

I bought mine at Canadian Tire. Wal-Mart also has one. As long as it's an OBDII scanner it will work with your Max.

A friend of mine has this one http://obddiagnostics.com/. Works well with a laptop.
