talked about it briefly the other day because i originally wanted a manual but none were to be found or were wayyy above my spending limit over the summer around this area.. said it would probably be in the ball park of a grand or a bit more, obviously the computer and tranny would have be swapped out or converted to manual.. they said this was a common request done in their garage.

think its worth it or not?

i, at this point think it is.. just because i plan on driving it to the ground for the next few years or more and dont really want to sell the auto just to get a manual.

note: never claimed to be the expert on this, just requesting opinions.

 

im its not worth it, theres a lot of threads on this and only a few have done it. id wait for a stick max to show up for sale instead of doing a conversion.

 

It depends on how many miles are on your Max and its not that expensive as people make it to be.

 

theres more to a swap (at least for 5.5 gens) the engines are mounted differently so you would have to get all new motor mounts and such.

(don't know if this is true with the 5th gen)

 

What shop did you talk to? If you have a shop do all the work, I would expect a bill of way over $1,000... I would expect to spend around $2,000 at least.

If you did all the work yourself, yeah you could prob get it around $1,000 if you got all used parts from Junkyards.

i'd wait also, i'd wait for a 5.5 gen to come around. the power difference alone from my 98 to my 02 is crazy.

 

I was in the same boat with my old 2k2 and a buddy talked me out of doing the swap. He said it would be alot easier just to sell it and buy a manual trans. If you don't have everything you need or you break a part on the install you'd be pretty well screwed especially if it's your daily driver. I was going to buy a really nice TE 2k3 but ended up buying a totally different car in the end.

5.5 gen are a lot harder to do auto to manual conversion then the 5th gen.

 

If you shop around long enough and hold out for truly good deals, you can do it for around $1k. Its not that hard of a swap, if you do your research first. I have yet to hear anyone who has actually done the swap say it was not worth it. I did it on my old 4th gen, trust me, it was worth it.

 

I heard that there was a parts list floating around somewhere that listed what parts you needed to do the swap. I checked in the 4th gen forum and found 1 but can does it also aplly for my 4th gen

Tilley charges around 800 for labor and in the 5.5 GEN the motor mounts are bolted not welded, its not that hard of a job, as Tilley will do mine come Summer.

 

let me know how it goes.. im going to be shopping around for a good deal on a 5.5 gen stick but it seems theres hundreds of results and good deals on the autos with lower mileage, so if i find a good enough deal ill just get one auto depending on price and convert or just get a stick if im lucky enough to find one

 

I am putting together all my parts right now had a donor car here in the state got most of my parts for alot less the buying new. The axles, clutch, flywheel, tranny will be new though.

 

I wish I would've known that last spring when I had to replace mine! It would have been cheaper to have him do the swap than to replace my crap tranny with another crap tranny! Tilley doesn't know it yet, but he's getting my car for a while in 2006.

 

Well george you think with all the driving you do , Manual would of been comfortable for you?. Also, yeah the swap is not that difficult as me and Tilley talked on the phone and he explained the only thing that he might be worried about is there might be a CEL becuase of the AT Computer reading there is no tranny, becuase it wont recongnize the MT

 

I can deal with a yellow light (I've had one on for 20k now...). Most of the driving I do is highway. If you know how to avoid traffic, you can get by much better around MD.

Yeah i thought about that also, but didint quiestion as he would of said we can swap but since he didint mention im not sure, Iam thinking the Main ECU controls it becuase when people request to buy ECU'S they specify MT/AT. Currently iam browsing thru ebay looking for various parts for the swap such as MT clusters/shifters/trims. Etc...

 

Yes, should be able to get one at a junk yard for about $50.

well im not gonna convert the 00 im gonna wait for a good deal on a 5.5 so if you could PM me the list required on that so i can do a little research just in case a good deal on a low mileage auto 5.5.. b/c sticks are either expensive up here in new york or dont exist.

my question is for the electrical, does the engine harness have to be changed as well as the ecu? because in my civic the ecu wasnt needed nor a different engine harness so im thinking it could possibly be the same for a MAX

also would anyone know the market price for a 5spd trans? im really considering converting mine i need a stick car in my life so its either convert this or go back to a honda
