No Time Like Snow Time

I know it's a bit off-topic, but....finally, some snow....very excited!

the maxima stops and goes like a snowmobile with snow tires

what a difference 2 hours make...got the ski rack on in the nick of time

The stock 17s are snow magnets though. When I was home (Buffalo, NY) for Thanksgiving I was driving through blizzard-like conditions and the next day every wheel was out of balance due to snow. Try driving down the Thruway at 80 in temporarily unbalanced wheels.

really? I never had a problem for the first two years with the stock 17's driving in deep snow. They only get snow in 'em if you're going sideways

those aren't stock 17's on mine though

I get that problem every winter. Steering wheel shakes like crazy until the snow melts from between the rims. I really should get some snow tires for my car with these really bad winters in Boston. I am hoping the HLSD will help out some.......

**** my car shoots across the snow like its on ski's with the POS OEM RE92's. They still have plenty of treat on them and they still suck. Anyone have any recommendations for an good all-season tire, I haven;t pulled myself to spend the money on snow tires just yet.

I just drove through white hell and back. I was in southern MD and had to drive 2.5 hours home. For those of you who aren't from Fairfax, VA and don't know what I'm talking about, I was on the far side of DC where it got hit the worst and drove to the complete opposite end of the greater DC region. My new Pilots worked out well, however. Now I can't wait to hit the slopes!

They're new this season (except for the 4 days they were on the guy's 350z that I bought them from)....so no word on wear yet. From what I've heard, the LM22s are good for 2-3 season (3-4 months on the car each season).

Today is the first day I used them in snow, albeit only a couple inches onthe road. I did some "emergency stops" and starts in a parking lot and they gripped very well....

The RE92s are terrible in anything except DRY, even when new. For tire suggestions, there's an entire forum devoted to tires....including polls on tire popularity.

Excuse me, who gave you permission to use the sacred name of Fairfax in your post, comrade Marylander? <-- this is for Maryland, full of "reds"

I'll race you to Snowshoe this thursday but we have to take the windy mountain road route, not the highways. Should have some light snow cover and slush, just to make it interesting.....

Us Marylanders actually work for a living, so I'm out on the Thursday thing. I'll probably have to wait until after the first of the year to hit the slopes. Freakin' Christmas presents!

when you think about me skiing on Friday (leaving after work on Thurs), think of how I'm getting paid with your tax dollars while I do it

George, you know I work in the PRM (Peoples' Republic of Maryland) right?

I'd be happy to have the snow over the ice we've had the last few days.

so you're saying you have the worst of both worlds? Working in MD (long hours) and living in VA (communist state). Sucks to be you!

Oh, but wait! You work for the gooberment! Three days on (eight hour days at that), five days off with a holiday every week just to break the monotiny. Rough life! Why don't you move to Frederick? Everyone else is doing it.

Virginia is a commonwealth....arguably the "freest" state in the union. Maryland...well....I hope you enjoy paying taxes and getting nothing in return Oh, and our DMV actually fills potholes and repaves roads more often than once every 25 years.....

(I will mention also that Maryland is home to PGC, the murder capital of the universe)...as to the move to Fred-neck... That would make for a 3-hour commute to work, not a 30 minute commute

as to my gov't work....trust me, I earn every cent I make. George, you know what I do

We got our 1st snow this Saturday, and I was finally able to test out my Blizzak WS50s. Last winter I had some old summer tires on the back and good WS50s in the front but in much wider size. This winter I picked up a set of 15" Sawblades off a 4th genner and got a set of 215-60-15 Blizzaks. I was flying in the snow, I passed a local cop who couldn't even get out of his own way like he was standing still. I hate the handling and noise they make on dry pavement, so I hope to get to use em in the snow more often. Deff money wise spent here, not only is the car much safer, but with OEM suspension I can finally take my mom or my in-laws on a ride places without em complaining bout my JICs being very crude to them. I will try to take some pics of the car tomorrow- I call it the Maxfinder

Anybody have the Firestone Winterforce tires? I have them on my truck and they're a good, cheaper alternative to the Blizzaks. Not sure how they compare to the Blizzaks though.

Mike - you might want to try out the Blizzak LM-22 (what I'm using)....though they obviously don't have the handling aspects of my Toyos on my 18's, they're actually not bad dry handling. A bit of sidewall roll, but probably no worse than a Falken 512 or something like that....Also they are not very loud at all, even on the highway (v-rated), since they were pretty much designed for German cars on the autobahn, supposedly.

snow sucks.. thanksgiving up here in albany it snowed a few inches.. at my camp in the adirondacks about 4.. i drove my car up there and it was fish tailing everywhere b/c i dont have snow tires.. took me an hour longer to get up there.. i would buy snow tires, would make all the difference in the world but im sellin it anyways. HID helps 10x at night, but without the tires to back it up, all youll see is how detailed the tree outline is as you go off the road.

only thing i love about winter is SKIING. but i would never dare drive this winter piece up to a mountain lol.. thats pandera's box waiting to happen.

Irish- I got all 4 tires for free, got a nice hookup So I couldn't complain bout what kinda Blizzaks they are... I'm not racing the car or anything remotely close to it in the winter anyways so I can live with the **** poor handling and floaty ride. I still can't belive how people can drive their Maximas on stock suspensions, it SUCKS big time. I don't think I have driven a sedan that handles worse than a 5th gen with OEM SE suspension on Blizzaks. I drove around with my summer tires and wheels on OEM suspension for bout a week and handling still sucked. I haven't had stock suspension on my car for the last 100K miles so I really didn't know how the ride was going to be like going back to OEM. I can't wait to put my JICs back on, it makes the car feel like a sports car and not a Dodge Caravan.

I love my ContiWinterContact TS790's in the snow! I got to test them out when we got 3 inches the other day... pretty damn nice. Dont like the asymetrical tread design though.

Oh, yeah, winter hit Ontario full force a few weeks ago Riding on Michelin Arctic Ice is nice on ice and snow too. We had one day on sheer ice and I was VERY thankful to them for bringing me home safe... They are fun to drive, much lighter than my 18" summers and cold air helps the propulsion nicely... The only thing I don't like about Michelins in general is constant need for balancing...

My Dunlop winter sport M3s handle better in the dry than the continental all seasons I had. And after just driving home through a blizzard, im glad that I bought these tires. They do very well in the snow.

I'll chime in here without reading the whole post...

I am about to put my stock 17s back on for the winter. Stock tires though, any recommendations? I need new tires bascially within a week of putting them on. Don't trust them for ****.

if you want a winter tire (that you can use when it's dry/rain also)...not "snow-only" get some Blizzak LM-22's...Mine are on, and will stay on the car until march. The dry handling is actually pretty respectable.

if you want an all-season tire that is decent in snow, the Toyo Proxes 4 are pretty good, the Falken Ziex 512 are pretty good (and inexpensive), and the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S are good (though $$)

whatever you put on, do it fast. Potenza RE92's + snow = accident in no time.

You should try what I have. They are Dunlop wintersport M3. They are awesome handling in the dry and rain, and are fantastic in the snow. My BMW customers use them and all love them

Check reviews on tirerack.com they have a great selection and decent pricing
