Auto shifter "grinding noise"

I have a 2000 auto, and lately when I shift to Park the shifter grinds and it needs some effort to bring it back from Park to gear.

I always engage the emergency brake before shifting into park and disengage the emergency brake after shifting into gear from park.

Do anyone else experience the same issue? Iam suspecting the cable is loose or the PNP sensor needs adjustment.

I'm sorry to ask the obvious but have you checked the transmission fluid? It sounds like it may be low.

The fluid level is fine. The problem is tempramental, kind of has its own mind, many a times the shifter is fine, but at times it does act wierd (specially in cold weather/downhill parking etc).

FLUSH YOUR TRANSMISSION! And maybe even consider running Auto-Rx through it for added cleansing beforehand. Sorry to be so blunt but I think it will help your situation. Remember, like any fluid in your car tranny fluid warps in volume according to temperature, and contaminants can make your shifter "sticky".
