Any info on a 2000 SE w/ 165K miles??

I'm thinking of buying a 2000 SE w/ 165K miles on it. That seems like a ton of miles for a 5 year old car. It was a 1 owner and I think he has the service history (has the owners manual, etc.). Its an automatic with all options. Is there anything I should know about this particular model that could go wrong mechanically?? I posted a similar thread in the 4th Gen and got excellent feedback on a high mile '95 5-speed. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

BTW - The guy wants $6K for it.

I bought my 2000 SE 5-speed with 117K miles on a stock clutch.

Mechanically, nothing is wrong with my car.

Ah-hem, paid $7,500 for it.

What does the service history say?

How old are things like struts, wheel bearings, exhaust, o2 sensors, MAF, tires...

Thanks for the quick feedback!! I just called him and he says he doesn't have the service history...only the owners manual and he's not sure how accurate the previous owner kept the records. He's been driving it himself and reports no issues or problems (of course). He's sending pictures and the VIN to run a CarFax tonight so I will let you know what I find out.

Is there any chance this could have been a rental and that's the reason for such high miles??

they usually did not have fully loaded SE's for rentals. You need to find out some of the service records, you can have a carfax run to get a better idea.

Its not that expensive and it can save you quite a bit of money in the long run. Also take it to a dealer and have them pick it apart for ANY problems, you are legally allowed to have it inspected by a pro.

The CarFax will indicate if the car was a rental.

my mom's has got 209k on the clock and it's still going strong on the original auto tranny....we've had the MAF, the coils, and three motor mounts replaced....that's all i can think of at the moment...but that thing still goes strong..it was making a noise a couple weeks ago that sounded like it had an exhaust leak, but then it magically fixed itself, so that's one less problem....i would say go for a different car or something, because 165k is a lot of miles, even if the max can last through it...

I'm my most humble opinion I think that anybody that doesn't save their automobile maintenance records doesn't like their car that much... just a thought before you buy from someone that "claims" a car is in good shape.

When I sold my '95 I didn't have all my records... but I at least had the last 5 years' worth or so.

You know what they say... words are only as good as where they come from. Get proof or some sort of evidence that proves the previous owner took care of it... otherwise, what do you have to go by?

Check build date, it might actually be closer to being 6 years old....

OK, just got the pics and the car looks very clean. I ran the VIN and it shows it as a 1 owner vehicle registered for personal use...so no rental. Whoever had it just drove a helluva lot. I will try to dig a little deeper and find some service records. Do most Nissan dealerships keep service history based on VIN number?? I know my Lexus dealer does but what about Nissans?? Anyway here are a couple of the pics...

the 3.0 l engine and tranny are beasts. my boy has one with around 210k miles and running strong. all the regulal parts that wear out, have worn out, like struts, brake components, and clutch (5spd). if you have it inspected, and everything looks good get the car. the price has to be right. with that kind of milage, i would not pay more than 5, 5.5k.

Even later SE's could get the 16" wheels if they did not have the Meridian package (the 17's were part of that package the first year of production and I believe they became standard on the SE in 2001 MY)

The car in question looks clean....real clean. Possibly used by a sales person? My experience says sales people do the repairs and maint because the vehicle is their bread and butter... no car means no money.

FWIW

As far how clean it is, I think those are pics from the car when it was brand new. The seats dont even look like they have been sat in.

It can be, the problem is that quite a few people have driven your car. You have no idea how they drove it... many people dont drive rentals to nicely. It is a risk, some are going to be beaten, some will be fine. If yours is still going strong, dont worry about it now it seems fine.

Well........
Let me ask you this. How do you drive a car you paid $50 a day for, knowing it's not your problem once you turn it in??
For that price though you got a good deal, IMO.

If you ask me $6000 for a car with 165,000 miles on it is ALOT of money...Even if it is immaculant. Why not spend 3 thousand more and buy one with 65,000?? You could find a 4th gen with under 100,000 for less money than that car will cost you.

Really?? Where?? If you find one with all SE options let me know and I'm all over it. Those are a lot harder to find than you may think...

BTW - I think I will offer him $5K cash...take it or leave it. Otherwise, that's just too many miles for me.

The search continues...

here's one 125 miles from your area with tv/dvd, rims, tint and alarm for 2500 more and only 68,000 miles.
He probably has stock rims laying around somewhere???

Thanks for looking but that 1st one is a 3rd Gen and the other one is 1500 miles away. That last one is OK but it looks like a GXE with a bunch of aftermarket stuff on it. And none of these happen to be in the color combo I want.

Anyway, I see your point though...just keep looking.

why are you looking for a nicer vehicle with higher miles? if you can't afford it, then step down in class, but get something that will at least serve you for a few years...another thing if you were paying 2-3 grand, then buying a POS is fine, but 6500 is a lot of $ and you can get a really nice car.

I'm not necesarily looking for a higher mile vehicle...just something nice in my price range. I am looking at mainly 4th Gen Max's but this 2000 came up so I was considering it due to the condition. The miles do concern me a bit but I have a couple of days to decide, find something else, or just wait. We'll see...I'm leaning towards the 3rd option just because of the miles. Thanks again for all the input! These auto specialty message boards are the best network going! I feel sorry for someone who owns a car that no one else likes or has and they have no one but the cats at Autozone to talk to about stuff.
