Sunova*****!

So my car has been making that weird noise at start up like alot of other people on here have been in cold weather.

I go to the mech, get the starter replaced, its good for like 2 or so weeks and it comes back.

I take my car back to my mech, they keep it for two days, and tell me they can't reproduce the noise, so I go pick up my friggin car, first start up THERE IT IS!!!

of course my mech was closed at this point, so they weren't there to hear it....I come home, try it 3 more times, its there every time....god Im so pissed I can't see straight.

So tomorrow morning before I go to work, I'm going to see if the car makes the noise, if it does, im going to my mech, trying it one more time. If it makes it again im gonna drag them out to the car and say LISTEN YOU DUMBF*CKS!

God im so pissed I can't see straight

a good ole to my mech at the moment

I'm a mechanic, and not being able to reproduce a problem is as much of a headache for us as it is for customers. I work at a Saturn Saab dealer, and most concerns are intermittent electrical problems. I wish people would try to see this from the techs point of view. My Maxima starter makes this noise 1/3 of the time, so I could see it not being duplicated. Especially if you drop it off hot, and pick it up at 5:00. Mine only does it first start.
I'm not defending your mechanic. Many are crooks, but he's probably not as dumb as you think.

I'm living with it on mine too, but edgeX already paid for a new starter, and it should be corrected.

I'm not saying my Mech is dumb, He's been a family friend for, God goin on 15 years now, I'm just saying he left it to his new lackies to try and reproduce the problem, when it just wasnt happening. So I went back first thing this morning popped the hood and said, hey listen....

they were dumbfounded that they couldnt get it to reproduce, so its going back next week and they are gonna just swap a new starter (no cost to me) and then keep it a day to see if it keeps makin the noise.

it can be fixed, the question is do you want to spend the money to fix it. With our cars, the starter engages the flywheel, when the starter begins going bad, it can begin to mar the flywheel. which may or may not be causing the sounds now. so the question is, do you want to spend the money to replace the starter and flywheel both of which are expensive as **** and 1 of which is a PITA to replace.

it can be done, but are you willing to pay for it, to me? yea I am cause I like a noise free car and the car is gonna need a new clutch soon anyway.

What makes you think the starter was the culprit to begin with?

cause the starter is shaking and struggling when the car starts, we also had a s***hescope on it when we tried and there was definite grinding inside the noise, plus if u ever have ur max on and try to turn the ignition again, that noise you here? thats the starter hitting a moving flywheel

would this be covered by the warranty? i still have the power train.. i hope it does... even if i do have warranty, people are saying that the mechs at the dealers are not inclined to do such big jobs...

In that case, change mechanics, and buy a new Nissan starter direct from a reputable Nissan parts vendor. Also make sure the starter is being installed/shimmed properly, and that the flywheel doesn't have any chipped/missing teeth.
