Questions about Nav Disc
Questions about Nav Disc
I just purchased a 2002, 6spd with Nav and have a couple of questions about the nav disc. I currently have version 5.1 which is the oldest available. Anybody have any idea how much of a difference there is between 5.1 and 5.5? I spoke with Zenrin earlier and they said there is a huge difference seeing as that mine one has major hwys and interstates on it. Just curious to see if anyone knew if the 5.5 had detail streets and door to door routing.
Let me know if you need a copy of the 5.5 and I will see what I can do about burning a copy for you.
I used to visit this forum a long time ago when I had my 97. Im glad to be back with a Maxima and look forward to chatting with you guys,
Best Regards,
James

Don't let them pull your leg too much. I have a couple of newer version discs and they aren't all they are cracked up to be. Unless you live in a highly populated area, the streets aren't going to be there. My old city of about 30K people only had the major streets and the highways. When I drove to a more populated area (i.e. an area where they decided to add most of the streets) it was very evident since only a few miles before, all I had were exits without connections!
That being said, when I drove in areas that most of the streets were listed, it was great. I could enter the address and such and be there in a decent route. Don't get me wrong, the route wasn't necessarily the best as even the newest versions don't list every street and will sometimes lead you down a wrong way or dead end.
So, to answer your question, there are differences between 5.1, 5.2, etc. but the differences aren't major. All versions (so far as I know) have door to door provided you are in a populated area as well as landmark door to door (like museums, parks, etc.). Just don't trust it too much as you might end up going around your butt to get to your elbow. Oh, and the door to door doesn't work across regions no matter how far you are trying to go inside the next region's CD... been there and tried that one.
Hope that helps!
Oh, almost forgot. Now that I am in Arkansas, I could use a copy of the region and the surrounding regions. I don't know if Alabama is in the same one as Arkansas, but I could use a "back-up copy" of that region if you'd be willing to make it. I can send you some shipping cash if need be! Just PM me and we'll work out the details. Thanks!

I live in Birmingham so I guess that would be considered populated. We are at 1mil here. I live about 4 miles south of Bham and I dont have any streets listed -- just hwys and interstates. I just hope that it is better because if it isnt they will be eating the charge for it.
Just as soon as I get a copy I will make sure to make a back up disc for you. In fact, as a gesture of goodwill to people on the board, I might supply a back up disc to anyone that needs it.

Cool!
4 miles south would just about do it from my experience. If you drive into the city, take a look and see if the disc shows any more streets and side roads. If so, you can almost expect the new disc to show about the same thing. I hope it doesn't for your sake but it just might. I honestly don't understand why they felt the need to include every run-down hotel in some areas and not the streets to get to a better one.
Oh, and don't forget to zoom in if you haven't already. Some streets don't show up when you zoom out, especially the smaller ones. And some streets in some towns aren't listed at all... just the highways and interstates!
By the way, you've definately got a rarer Maxima. I think there are 3 or 4 other 2002 6-speeds with factory Nav who post. I think there are only a couple of 03 6-speeds with factory Nav. And as far as options go, all options including Nav in a 6-speed is definately not something you see every day.

Yeah I was told this was a very rare option. I feel like I might have overpaid for it though. it has 43k and perfect paint and interior. Paid 17,200 including a 7yr/125k full coverage warranty.
I actually scrolled the map over to downtown Bham and there are very very few streets listed there. Another thing is that I have only seen one hotel listed and one gas station, and this is on a HEAVILY travelled road with many hotels and gas stations.
If it isnt better than this I will be disapointed and I will make sure I do everything I can to get my money back.
I think Louisianna is on a different disc but if you liek I dont mind burning a copy for you....never hurts to have more discs. I was actually hoping to come across some other people I might be able to trade with.
Best Regards

Any body wanna tell me how much the Navi is a year...I'm thinking of either getting the Navi or OnStar. I'm almost sold on the OnStar, when i used it it blew my mind so let me know wha ya'll suggest and or think. Get at me.
Like James said, no charge for Nav, other than the initial $2000 option cost... Oh, and you learn the hard way that the CD's aren't all they are cracked up to be. Updated CDs, however, cost over $100 each. And with 9 regions on seperate CDs, you get the picture.
Were I to do it again, I'd probably get an aftermarket unit.
