Bigger airfilter = better?
Bigger airfilter = better?
I currently have the Apex-i dual fannel filter....Heard great reviews about them and decided to go with this setup...it's not the cheapest or practical filter (not reuseable) but I got a killer deal back in the days when I bought it....thats why I decided to go this route instead of the Stillen POP
I'm curious to know if switching to a larger air filter such as the JWT/Stillen POP would be beneficial? According to apex-i's website, the filter housing is small, but the design inside is what makes it superior to allow more air to be sucked in....now granted Stillen/JWT doesn't have some fancy design, it is larger in volume compared to the APEX....with that in mind, would the gains of filter volume be canceled out since the design isn't so good? Blah, comments/ideas?
I'm planning to do other stuff to get gains...Cuz i'm sure just adding a larger filter won't do much....I plan to add bigger intake piping and large mass air flow sensor

hey richard....have you seen my dyno in the dyno section? reply to it if you get a chance....
oh yeah, I don't have a TB with me....these are summer plans...just wanting to get an idea...

i have a fairly large filter and will be going to a 3.5" maf tube before too long. i want to be on a dyno when it goes on so i can richen the mix up. hopefully i can find a bored TB to go along with it. i have switched between this filter and a smaller filter (around 4 inches shorter), the car feels better with the larger filter but it could be in my head.

Either way, what TB are you looking at installing?

I know when i went from standard K&N to stillen filter, i felt a difference, but that could just be me. If your not boosted, i'm guessing after a certain point it doesnt matter how big it is cause it will still be suckin in the same amount of air. As far as apexi vs stillen type, i think they both will work the same. If i felt a difference its probably cause the stillen had a better design? just some insight, i know i didnt help....
I have the stillen pop charger on my 02 and i like. had it for almost 3yrs and no complaints sounds nice, huge filter, pretty cheap, and best of all its reusable so i say get a stillen pop charger and call it a day. As for the benefit of such a large filter I couldnt say except it looks cool so
for the stillen.
for the stillen.
KLop - thats what I was thinking....the APEX's better design will out do STILLEN's....but since STILLEN's larger volume will compensate for that and they will be equal out in the end...I'm not even sure if APEX's filter is legitmately superior in design compare to other filters on the market....I saw their design and it COULD be a marketing gimmick....but I also did see a filteration/flow test awhile back and APEX won both in terms of filteration/flow....others were Blitz, HKS, K&N etc...
Richard - I'm not sure of the gains....it shouldn't be that huge....but every little counts if you ask me....I'm thinking of a high flow intake manifold when it comes out!

Unless anyone can prove anything, this thread is useless. Besides butt dynos, we have no data besides butt dynos and everyones is calibrated differently.
PAB/GAB FTW. Desk grommets for the stock look...

bigger will not equal better....you ever seen the engine bays on 600, 700, 1000 HP supras or skylines? they make insane power while mosly using those HKS mushrrom type foam filters. now they are used because if limited space in the engine bay but they are smaller than the KNs most of us use, and think about the power diff needing to feed a 1000hp twin turbo. so i say no, no diff. in fact i went to a smaller KN than my original berk came with.
in order for the apexi funnel design to work the way they describe, we would need huge air volume and speed to be sucked in. the air velocity is not close to what our car eats to make any difference b/w these filters. the main benefit of wais is the shorter path to air, more direct path from tb to filter.
