Help with what to say?

I need to take my car in for war. work on the 3rd gear that's going south.
I've never owned a car that still had war. left, and needed something.

How should I approach the dealer? I don't want to come off stupid sounding and have then try to take me for a ride, then again I don't want to sound like I'm only there to take advantage of the war. It's about to run out in 900 miles

first don't go to the dealer and say I'm here for "WAR", just go and say "Warranty service" what you think the car has wrong. They are going to test it and say "Cannot duplicate" then ask for the manager and test the car with him and hopefully your car does it with him........
That's it!!!

LOl yeah, war. work wouldn't be a great start.

I wasn't sure if I should mention warranty work first, because I didn't want to put them on the deff. I'll try it at one dealer and see how it pans out.

I was in a very similar situation with my 2002 last year. With about 1000 miles left on the powertrain warranty (59k miles), I decided to have a dealer check it out as I'd suspected the trans was going. They of course gave me the "could not duplicate" crap, and I didn't have time to pursue it further. Now I'm at 62k, out of warranty, and obviously still having the transmission problems. My probelm is a very rough shift between 2nd and 3rd. It mostly goes away once the trans has warmed up, but it's still aggrivating.

The moral of the story is make sure if they say "cannot duplicate" that you stick on them or bring it to another dealer. Maybe just try explaining to them that you are aware that you have very little time left on the warranty and that you're not just trying to get a free replacement you don't need, but explain the problem in-depth. These guys know what goes on the transmissions in these cars, and it usually has something to do with the 2-3 shift being very rough or slipping. If what you tell them agrees with what they know to be the problem with these transmissions, that will probably help.

Just my .02

Bigdu - If you made a claim about the problem before the warranty was expired then I think you still have an argument to get it repair via "warranty". If the dealer tells you otherwise call Nissan USA, explain to them you had the problem prior to the warranty's experation and that you brought in for service. There is record of your complaint with the dealer and I know I had the same issue with a Chevy I owned and of course the dealer wanted nothing to do with it untill they got a call GM Customer Service telling them to replace my tranmission. Dont give up so easily. We pay a lot of money for our cars and deserve the same quality service. Give them hell and get what you deserve!

Yeah, bigdu-my problem is the same as yours. It's there, and I know it is just a matter of time, but I fear it's not going to be enough for the dealer to say is a real problem.

As mentioned in the last post, I think as long as I take it in and have record that I noticed it before the end of the warranty, and the dealer said it wasn't an issue I should have a leg to stand on if it does go south completely. I don't think it will be hard, or undupable. Because I can get it to do it everytime with out effert now.
