drove around for about an hour today all over town and on a mountain road... the rattle i get is at about 1100-1200rpm. I am kind of puzzled that it's such a narrow rpm band. i am gonna find out what the stall speed id on the torqe convertor, for some reason i am begining to think it might be the problem.

you're the one jumping to all these totally different conclusions...
have you even checked to see if it is indeed your precats? that's the first thing i'm going to do...

I have this problem but probably worse than all you guys.. I have the car for about 6 months now and its been doing it since day one.. Now its just really loud..

if i keep the rpms at 1700-2100 now at any speed even highway the car sounds like a damn diesel with loud metal grinding noise.

Could it be something in the cat?

i am eliminating possibilities... and i can tell youright now that precats is not the cause... at least on my car

Heh. I made a post about this months ago. Never took it to the dealership because I know it would've been a waste of $95. Sometimes I hear it and sometimes I don't. Asked the techs if this was a common problem and of course they were of no help. It's honestly not loud enough for me to worry. It sounds like something the car naturally does. Makes me feel better that many others have the same sound at about the same RPM's.

I didn't have time to go to the dealership but I took a closer look under and it seems to be something on the exhaust thats rattling. I think its from the pre cats but not too sure.

another question... Does anyone here have a manual transmission or does this rattle happen only to automatic cars?

Jumping on this thread. I've got it too, but it's not loud enough to be bothersome. It was when I had an aftermarket intake, but now that I'm back to stock it's muffled.

Add another "victim" to the list. My 2002 SE Auto does the same thing....sounds like pinging to me....always at about 1800-2000 RRM...less or more RPM and it goes away completely....been doing it as long as I can remember....at first thought it was low octane gas, but have used nothing but Super for years and it still does it. Like most people, it's not bothersome enough for me to grapple with the folks at the dealership about it, but I would love it if someone came up with the definitive solution.

After reading all these posts, it seems that this has nothing to do with wiring, VRIS, or gas. It's a vibration coming from the pre-cats blowing out, or a virbration of the exhaust pipe.
My car idles rough in the cold mornings, could this be due to the residue messing up my sensor?
If so, how expensive is it to replace the pre-cats and all that vs. headers?

Same "bees in the can" rattling for me too. I had narrowed the problem of my noise on my 2002 SE with Hot Shot headers. It seems to be the lower thicker heat shield just between the rack and pinion & back header. When I put tension on heat shield while having someone giving car light throttle, no noise. Tried to bend/pry and stuff a piece of rubber between heat shield and rack & pinion. Still continues to vibrate. All out of ideas short of removal

I have the same exact noise and its getting louder day by day. That noise kind of dissapears with the heater on. That noise is really loud when I first start the car. It sounds like a diesel when I step on the gas slightly at 1.5-2.5RPM. I had a check engine light the whole time for about 5 months now and finally the car shut off on me, power steering went out, I think I have a problem with the alternator as the windows were slow to roll up. 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE model. That noise also gets louder as you tilt the steering wheel to the fullest (either left or right) and give it some gas. I was making a 180 degree turn in a big parking lot and that noise sounded very loud. I am having other problems as well, but went to Auto Zone & pulled a P0430 code. I changed my front motor mount which was worn out but I didn't change the other 2 mounts (side & back). I changed the motor mount near the radiator. Also transmission seems to have a problem because it either jerks or slips between 1st;2nd or 2nd;3rd. I was thinking about a full-transmission fluid flush but I know thats not the issue. In order to fix the multiple problems Im thinking about switching out the rest of the bad mounts and replacing the pre-cat with headers. Also I'm going to have the dealership look at the Catalyc Convertor and the pre-cats to see where this noise is coming from. They probably had other Maximas with the same problems.

They told me I indeed need to fix my alternator because the alternator bearing is completely ceased and it is making a lot of noise. The reason why the alternator just failed is either because the remanufactured one I put in 8 months ago either failed or was put on too tightly (belts). They said this could also cause the alternator to go. They also said I pulled a code for the check engine light which indicated that the catalyic convertor (pre-cat) needs to replaced which is going to cost $800.

2000 5-speed. I have been fighting this issue for a while. It occures under load at 1500 RPM, not neutral. If I'm on a slight incline and can rock back and forth at 1500 RPM I will hear a "bees in a can" type of noise. I noticed this first when I installed my intake, Catman y-pipe, and STS. I thought the noise was from the heat shield I banged out for the STS, then I thought it was the y-pipe. I went back to stock y-pipe and have the same problem. It drives me nuts

questions you should ask yourself... what kind of oil do you use? and does your engine consume any?

Hey,
For everybody in CA, there is a 7 year 70 thousand mile warranty on emissions parts. I had a noise, but my mechanic and I thought it was the cat, took it to the dealership, replaced it for free($895).
Just a heads up

Emissions warranty everywhere else is 8/80, and that's only if you/they can prove it is indeed the cat.

Unfortunitly I have the same problem. For me I can also here a brief rattling noise when I first put it into reverse, not so much in drive. The rattling is only present up to 1500 RPM from a driving from a stop. Thus far its only a brief rattling. To me it seems like motor mounts, just because the rattling is present only when there is the most amount of torque applied. I dont know what it is yet, but its really annoying.

If it helps:
2002 GLE A/T
Berk Intake
Synthetic Oil
High Octane Gas

Every one who has this should post the details of there setup. It might determine a common factor.

So far possible determining factors are as follows:

Front and Rear Pre-Cats
Flex Pipe
Motor Mounts
Catalytic Converter
VIAS
Y-Pipe

We should be listing what has been tried and has not worked.

Lets eliminate this problem!!

Just a follow up, the rattling noise is more like a creak coming from what sounds like the inside of the drivers side dash. Any ideas?

Also anyone know where to purchase the motor mounts listed above?

don't want to hijcak the thread but I think i have the similar problem. After I start my car i hear the matellic rattle noise just before it changes to 2nd gear, then again in the 3rd gear. It's an automatic transmission. But later when my car goes back to 1st gear again, no more sound. Any ideas?

I have been trying to figure this out for a while now. Been reading about it but have yet to find a true fix for it.

Car – 2002 Infiniti I35, auto (wifes car, she drive really slow, not been beat on) about 73k miles,

Things I have notice:
BG 44K fuel system cleaner. Didn’t do much, if anything
Replaced PCV. Did help but not fix. Still making the noise but not as much
Weather – the noise wasn’t as loud or happen as much when it was cold out
Engine does use a bit of oil, maybe 1-1.5quart every 3k.
I have had the wife try different gas (always 93) but have not seen any difference

I want to hear from you guys who are still under warranty. What did the dealer do to fix it? Has it come back?

What have you guys tried and what were the results? How many miles do you have? Does the engine use oil? Does it happen when the engine is cold, hot, warm, wet/rain, dry, sea level, so on.
Lets try to get some common factors.

My noise was minimized when I went back to stock intake. I also had a Berk.

Not sure if the intake was causing it, or if the stock airbox just muffled it.

nothing close to what you guys are thinking. try throw out bearing. i know when i'm under light to moderate load between about 1500 to 2500rpm i hear a rattle. WOT it goes away. idling can hear at squeek from the dr side eng compartment. press the clutch in, goes away. isolated concern to throw out bearing, if you have at manual trans. try it guys and let me know.

This makes sence, mine just started it and I just found out I have a broken motor mount. I will let you know if it goes away when I replace my mounts with in the next three weeks.

I have the same "Bees in a can" sound from 1000-2000rpm, under load. I've checked under the car and everything is secured.
I can heard the sound if I keep my foot on the gas near the rpm range. It happened just as the weather turned warm and its getting worse (louder).
This is driving me nuts because I've recently had to replaced 2 O2 sensors and the MAF ($$$).

I've had this problem for probably a year now..some mechanics have said its one of my heat shields but I'm going to look into this motor mount possibility. It's annoying but I can't justify spending lots to find out what it is. I've got an 03 max 6spd, recently had plugs changed, running on synthetic oil and always premium gas.
