Wassup org? This mod is amazing...credit goes to Irish44j for inspiring me to do this mod....first lets check out the after product

Looks kind of messy...but I don't mind

Another side shot

Check out how much blow by I got in only 100 miles! Also note that my filter is taken out...heard it collects more oil without the filter being in place....with the rate I'm going, I probably need to dump the blow by every 800 miles or so...

Here are the instructions for doing this mod!

Just got back from the store...here are the supplies you need...

1. TWO (2) watts 3/8th to 1/4th hose barb
2. FOUR (4) mini hose clamps...(not shown in the picture becuz i already had some in the garage)
3. ONE (1) Husky Mini General Purpose Filter
4. 3/8th ID (inner diameter) braided hose....I got 3 feet...I recommend more since I ran out of 3 feet pretty quick

Here is a close up of the WATTS hose barbs you have to get...it looks exactly like this!

A close up of the container which the Husky filter came in....looks just like this...

Installed on my car

The last and final picture...had this ebay catch can for 5 months...drained it out...and barely anything came out!@@ ...but my inlet and return hoses were both soaked in oil...meaning oil was getting back!! and not getting trapped...oh well...all i gotta say for this catch can is

it collects the excess oil that gets dumped back into the intake manifold....basically it keeps your engine cleaner...and should reduce pinging

you should use the other thread for reference...becuz my engine is a vq35...i see that you have a 2000 which comes with the vq30...our pcv valve locations are different....so use the other thread for reference, since most of the guys over there have vq30s

That is weird with the oil catch can. My turboed altima was like that. Wouldnt collect oil for the longest time. Then one day it started collecting oil. But that probably because the rings were going bad ;(

Nice Steven. This might put me over the edge to do this. I should be familiar with the location you have it hooked to, just messed around with it for the plug and coil change. Any more pics/info?

Yo steven, Nice work,
one thing; I used that same clear reinforced tubing for mine, and the heat caused the inner section of it to collapse, but the outer part was still holding its shape, I had to take the tube off, and look down the inside to see that it was collapsed.
So I unfortunately had to switch to the plain black fuel line.

how weird...I actually been using another catch can but with the same type of hose...it never collapsed and held up well for the 6 months I used it....and I would check out my catch can after some hard driving, and the hoses are still rock solid...

Okay, this is new to me, so please, forgive my ignorance...I want to learn

Anyway, so this collects oil that would have been dumped back into the manifold. Check. Got that, but does this mean you actually lose oil? Do you have to check the oil level often to see if any needs to be replaced? What are the pros/cons of this mod? Im about to do everyones fav "mod', seafoam here in a couple of weeks just before I do an oil change, so im interested in this.

Thanks in advance for putting up with my stupidity

No you don't lose oil....even if the catch can was not in place, the same amount of oil will get burned up as if the catch can was in place...the catch can won't make a difference if you are losing oil...

The Pros about this mod....the oil gets collected instead of mixed in with the gasoline and get burned....oil mixed with gasoline = lower octane....

I can't think of any cons so for....only thing is you have to pay $18 for this mod

What i don't understand is doesnt car manufacturs test there engines for good length of time before bringing them to market. Nissan had to know this engine pisses oil like this before they put it into production....

Keep in mind that everyone's oil catch per miles driven will vary. If your driving is mostly highway then it will be less and if you spend more time at idle to light throttle in stop and go traffic, then vacuum in the intake manifold will be higher and more suction on the pcv will catch more oil.

Also another org member pointed out that the amount of oil that is filled in your oilpan has an strong impact on oil caught in this type of setup. So if you fill up with just enough oil to be in the lower side of the L-H zones on the dipstick then less oil should be caught as less frothing by the crank and valvetrain will theoretically lower actual ppm of oil in the crankcase air. Also a smaller factor will be the weight of the oil used, with 0-30, 5-20 and 5-30 being lighter oils and more likely to create higher oil catch levels then heavier 10-30 weight oils etc.

By all accounts this is a worthwhile mod especially given the reduction of oil drawn into the combustion chamber which benefits octane, it has almost eliminated light throttle ping on my 02 and secondly a cleaner intake manifold.

Thanks for doing this. I am doing it this weekend when I install my nitrous kit. I don't want the lowered octane from the excess oil blow-by.

fosho! part of the reason why i did this mod is to keep the octane level up....i'm constantly tuning with my wideband o2 sesnor and apex-i vafcii...i wanna make sure i don't ping from the excess blow by....california already has crappy as hell 91 octane...excess blow by would make it even worse!

keeping the octane level up is a must with nitrous too!

BTW im a newb and just got my maxima last wednesday. I know oil is a matter of preference but what does nissan recommend for the 3.5 engine? I love this forum. I used to be a member of altimas.net and I just want to say you guys kick ***.
