Mine idles fine. The ES motor mounts transmit some vibration through the steering wheel though.

Yeah, mine also idles fine. Can't even tell it's on if sitting in car while it's parked and running. How many miles do you have on the car? Maybe, it's time to change your plugs, check/replace coils, clean throttle body, etc.?

other than that you can try TB cleaning as mentioned earlier, hypergrounding, and of course SEAFOAM

I noticed after the timing advance the idle got smoother, but I can still feel it when the A/C is on. Other than that its perfect

Mine also has a very small "hiccup" every few secs, usually only noticeable when the engine has been running quite a while. Not really a stall and the tach needle doesn't move at all, but I can hear it.

Did you find anything out regarding yours?

the stock idle is 650 rpm (+/- 25 rpm). if you guys are falling below that, you may want to do the ilde learning procedure to set right.

Thanks, I was curious what it should be at, now I know. My '00 also runs very quiet, even from standing outside the car one of my friends ask if my car was on, I said yeah, he was pretty amazed.

my 02 also does the slight little bump every few seconds. It only has 43k on it, and is absolutely silent. Definitely cant hear anything. But if you really think about it and feel for it you can feel a SLIGHT bumpiness to the idle.

I assumed it was normal but maybe not huh?

I worked at a dodge/chrysler dealer for the last 4 years and have noticed how all the hemi powered cars (even the "luxurious" 300C) have a little bumpiness to the idle. Just feels like a powerful engine under the hood. May sound dumb but thats what i thought the maxima was doing, specially since it is so slight.

Smooth, even after not quite 60,000 miles.

But it always idles and runs enough smoother immediately after an oil & filter change that the difference is noticeable. It's got the 5 speed manual transmission, if that matters any . . .

Do you guys have most of the bolt-on mods on?

After CAI + Headers + mid pipe + high flow cat + exhaust + advanced timing + pulley + new plugs + SAFC II, my car idles alittle rough. It seldom bounces between 700 up to 1000 every so often at a complete stop (stop light or stop sign).

I am still trying to figure out what's going on. Not to mention my ac Condensor is making a louder than usual noise (the belt is really noisy and I am wondering if the pulley is affecting anything).

Sorry, your right it's the compressor. I had it replaced and the noise was gone for a week. Now back to the same problem with the noise.

Noise you are hearing is probably the tensioner idler pulley.... its fairly common that those go bad.

I have 155K miles on mine, every possible mod but camshafts, and everything is maintained beyond anyones expectations. My idle is butter smooth even with Place Racing solid engine mounts.

Would changing the tensioner idler pulley help?

Tensioner idler pulley tends to fail and make noises on EVERY Maxima. No matter if its a VG, VE, VQ- they all have a smiliar pulley used for AC or PS or Alternator. They have bearings inside the pulley that just tend to fail over time.

I've repleaced 3 on my car so far.... No biggy problem thou. Lil problems here n there every few tens of thousands of miles do not break my wallet, especially since the car has paid for itself over the years, and its paid off. I work on cars for a living and see WAAAY more stuff go wrong even with Hondas when they get this old, my car is supper reliable in any aspect compared to those I work with- Acura for a living.

Mike is that pretty easy to change? Idle jumps when the radiator fan comes on or when I turn on A/C

Is that pulley what causes this problem. My idle jumps up when I idle for a few minutes in park or if I turn the A/C on, but it only does it when the weather is warmer. It never does it through the winter. I posted about it and no one responded. I jump up to 12 or 130o. Any ideas other than the accessory pulleys?

Idle speed is supposed to increase whenever a heavier electrical demand is placed on the alternator and has nothing to do with the condition of the tensioner pulley. I think it's to prevent stalling. Even aftermarket EFI kits have this feature.

ECU calculates given load value and will bump the idle speed up. For instance there is a Power Steering pressure sensor on the high pressure line going from the PS pump to the rack. When you turn the wheels it detects that the pump needs to work harder in order to turn the wheels. So the ECU bumps the idle speed, same thing goes if you pump your brakes alot while sitting at a light in neutral- idle will raise. When the AC system kicks on- it creates the most drag on the engine, especially when turning the wheel and asking the PS pump to work harder.

My Maxima never exceeds 900RPMs when you mess around with the steering wheel, or the AC kicks on. It does tend to idle at 1400RPMs or so when fired up cold, and then gradually gets down to 750 RPM idle. When your cooling fans are about to kick on- you will notice a BUMP in the idle speed for a split of a second, and then cooling fans kick on. This is done by the ECU as it anticipates a load put on a electrical system/alternator. Its called ELD- electronic load detection, ECU monitors the value and adjusts idle speed as needed.

Pulley has NOTHING to do with your idle speed bumps etc. The only thing that pulley can do is make noise, and thats why I mentioned it. Otherwise that pulley just tensions the drive belt and spins along with it. If you hear any weird noises from that area of the engine- grab a broom stick and hold it to the area of the motor and put your ear at the other end of the stick. The broom stick will amplify the sound of the part that makes the noise in the engine bay. They make special s***oscopes for this kinda work, but I find long screwdrivers, broom sticks etc work just as well.

KEEP the stick away from moving OBJECTS !

Stupid me -- I cranked the car a couple of times when I didn't even notice that it was idling. The only time I hear the engine idle is when I have it in a garage. When I park outside, it is whisper quiet.

with my Greddy EVO2 on start up it drones, but once it warms up there's no shakes and it's relatively quiet when the windows are up at idle.
