Multiple IACV questions.

I was wondering if someone could explain in detail exactly what an IACV really is and what flows inside the two tubes that it is connected to.

Reason for my question is because like many other users on this forum, I cleaned out my T/B to later get the SES light.

The code pulled was Idle too high, IACV. I never really got a chance to change the IACV until a few weeks ago (9 months later).

I took the sensor off the entire metal thing and just installed it into my IACV slot. There was no SES light for about 150 miles since I did it. As soon as I hit the highway, the ugly light returned.

Could it be that because I didnt install the metal peice, the IACV is still not working properly. Afterall, I thought air traveled through it.

I heard that people had to replace their computer (ecu/ecm).
I thought of that too but the light does not go on right away like all the others yet waits for me to drive at high speeds before it goes on. I have already tried to buy a computer but was warned that I would have to get it reprogrammed to understand my key.

What do you guys think.

occacuonaly the ecu and iacv do have to be replaced together, but to my understanding this is not always!

the iacv controls the amount of air entering the engine at idle, and the low rpm range (i think), acting like adjustment for the throttle valve, to add or take away very small amounts of air. the fluid running through is coolant.

if u only replaced the black sensor that is ur prblem, there is another small sort or butterfuly valve inside the metal housing that usually gets very dirty. the iacv needs replacing as a whole unit, including metal housing.

try replacing the entire unit and disconnect the battery for 24hrs to reset ecu.

btw i just bought a new one, replacing it this week.

wow thanks for letting me know.

If I was to replace the entire IACV, i would have to drain the coolant in the radiator?

No need to drain the radiator. There is not much in the TB in the first place.

first remove the intake and all hoses, disconnect maf connector, tps, and iacv connectors, and anything else needed.

remove the whole tb (4 bolts) and disattach the two hoses (will be a bit messy with the coolant, use a rag underneath). then there are 5 small screws holding the iacv, make sure to use a properly fitting screwdriver cause the will strip very easily.

be sure to rrplace gasket (new unit comes with one) if u are just cleanning it, ull need to make one from gasket material, i highly suggest not trying to reuse old one it will leak, mine did!

rebolt and reconnect hoses and connectors!
