So for a cheap $30 I had an exhaust shop take out the B-pipe resonator. The vid below is a sound clip. There is some rasp, and the exhaust sounds much deeper when driving.

i dig it... sounds a lot meaner. I may call around tomorrow and try to have this done. How long did it take them to remove it?

10 minutes, they just cut out the resonator and weld on a straight pipe.

I dont like the rasp...get a true exhaust...at higher rpm's it sounds fine...but who spends most of hte time driving at higher rpms ( besides me .. ) ...

Put it back on...that's my opinion..

Anybody have a clip of one of a 3 liter or you think it would sound the same? I like the deep sound at idle and startup just not so sure about the rev-rasp. I could get used to it though, 30 bucks i mean come on- which one is the b-pipe exactly?

The rasp is not that apparent, since I was revving from idle to 4,000rpm back to idle for the first few seconds you hear the rasp. But normal driving there is no rasp, as heard by a friend as I did a quick drive-by simulating regular driving with the car shifting at 2,xxxrpm.

Should sound similar but other people with 3.0 said the engine rasp more. The b-pipe resonator is the round tube under the rear passenger door. We only have one resonator so it is easy to see and find.

sounds pretty cool...you should make a sound clip of driving by since it sounds when the car's in gear than in park. i like tho

i just found a guy here in dfw that would do it for 45. I may go for it. Our exhausts only have 1 pipe correct? He said to make sure that was the case to get that price. Is that right?

Yeah i guess the resonator is after the main cat before the muffler in the b-pipe.

the muffler shop i go to only charges $25 for taking out the resonator and putting in a straight pipe...i did that with my other car but i don't think i'll do it with my maxima tho =/

If I made a video of in car or drive by, all you'll hear is the intake sound from the engine. The exhaust really is still pretty quiet...

alot of people on another forum i'm a member of think it sounds like poo. They say that 'a genuine timex is better than a fake rolex'. I think it sounds pretty cool though. Our stock exhausts have zero sound to them, ya know? It's not like we're chunkin flowmasters in there! Just a nice suttle change to give it some cajones. That's what i'm thinkin, anyway.

Just imagine the stock exhaust but a little louder. And I don't really care what others think about the sound, I think for $30 and a little louder exhaust it is worth it. Tha rasp does not come on til like 4,000rpm and I certainly do not daily drive that fast.

Yea i got that done too... only thing is that i got 33 inch pipin installed were the resonator is at soo i can get some exhaust build up. Right now i'm running complete straight pipe...sounds really mean. GGRRRRRR!!!

a buddy of mine said that removing the resonator would make it considerably louder on the interior of the car? Is that a true statement?

Well ya, resonator = silencer and the whole purpose to is to quiet down the exhaust. But in my case, you hear the exhaust in the cabin when accelerating, like a very quiet "wooo" sound. It does not drone at all, or too loud.

So whats with the resonator and muffler, both silencers and work together? Only difference is the resonator isnt as powerful so you can cut it out and it sounds a little better? Cause ive heard cars(not a maxima but i wonder how it would sound) that just run without a muffler and they dont sound good at all.

Yes, the resonator and the muffler work together to quiet down the exhaust. Most car manufacturers use specific combos to get the sound they want, some even use harmonic dampeners. But whether or not cutting out the resonator to make the exhaust louder sounds good is subjective.

is there any long term affects that would damage the car by doing this? i'm talkin about cat damage, o2 sensor damage or higher emissions (ozone damage)

People...seriously now, the resonator = muffler, muffler = resonator. What do they do? Quiet things down....they do not affect emissions, do not damage the cats if removed...why? Because it is just a metal box with fiberglass, which tones down the exhaust gases that are flowing through. So what happens when removed? Your exhaust becomes louder....just that...louder.

You'll only hear the intake, the exhaust is no where near loud enough to be heard.

Well we can only comment on what we heard from the clip. Take some sound clips of you in the car flooring the gass and some clips of your car as you drive by at WOT and then we will be able to provide better feedback

It's OK, gas is expensive right now and I'm not the only one with this mod, maybe someone else can do all that.

Had it done too, 3.0
I just got this done the other day on my 2k1, it sounds pretty good better than i expected actually. I think the resonator quiets more on the infiniti than the maxima, cause mine doesnt seem as loud as his. Cost me 50 bucks, cheapest i could find, its a little bit deeper at startup and idle and has a little more tone when driving. its not as raspy or high pitched as i thought it would be with the 3.0 compared to the 3.5, cause his sounds pretty good with a bigger engine i thought it would sound like **** with smaller but i like it, and def. recommend it
