Possessed locks, voodoo brakes and questions inside>>>
Hi all:
Took me long enough to get 15 posts. First a bit of a background, then on to the questions. Right now I drive a 94 Pathfinder that likes to lock me out or lock me in the car. (Especially when it is cold out-- this past winter I would spend minutes at a time trying to get out of the car, because every time I tried to open the door, the very act of pulling on the door handle caused the door lock to lock, then when I let go of the handle, it unlocked again. Keep in mind, I am IN the car and very angry.)
Anyway, my last real car was a 300zx Twin Turbo and I loved that car, but I sold it to get more money in my pocket. Right now, I would love to get another sports car, but my impending wedding and impending new job in another city combine to make it impossible. I just want a cool car now and since I grew up around Nissans, the Maxima is a logical choice-- at least until the GT-R comes out. :-)
A few questions have arisen in my search for a 5.5 6 speed Maxima with low miles. They are listed below and thank you in advance for all answers that are given!
1. Does the paint on the Maximas really suck? I have already started to shy away from black Maximas because I am afraid the rock chips will become unbearable. I really want a dark color and it seems like everyone has a silver Maxima, so my favorite has really become the gray lustre color. Kind of like a Charcoal. I guess the chips wouldn't be THAT obvious on it as opposed to black.
2. Now about these brakes, sometimes I see rust circles on the brake rotors and that tends to concern me, but is that a purely cosmetic defect or does that indicate some serious voodoo? I would probably want to get new brakes regardless.
3. Is everyone in agreement that the stock stereo is a piece of crap?
4. I am located in central Iowa but my girl is located in central Long Island and so I have been conducting my Maxima search in both locations. However, to me it would seem that a 50,000 mile Iowa Maxima would be a much better choice than a 25,000 mile NYC Maxima, simply because of the different driving styles, esp. on 495 out there. Fair assessment or not?
5. Ultimately, I would like a 2002/2003 Maxima SE with 6 speed manual and LOW miles-- under 50,000. What are some ballpark figures? Keep in mind I have extensively searched autotrader.com and cars.com so I have a good idea of what people (i.e. dealerships-- the paragons of good and purity that they are) are asking, but what have people actually paid?

1. Yes it does buy a max and welcome to world of chipped paint. Grey luster
looks good but I like my 5th gen sterling mist especially during rainy days.
2. it's ok.
3. Depends if it's GXE they have clarion truely piece of crap, that's what I had.
but if you buy SE or GLE with BOSE it's sound's way better. For example My brother's 4th gen stock stereo easely outperforms my pioneer.
4. yes. I'd buy max with 40k driven in 1 year rather than 20k in 4.

1. i have a black 02 max and the paint does suck, the hood had been repainted for rock chips and theres already more.
2. my brakes havent rusted out of the norm
3. the stock stereo suck, the 4th gen bose is better because the rear speakers are on the back dash which makes better sound. i added a single 12 with 125 watts rms and it fixed that right up.
4. agreed
5. i paid 11,500 for an 02 6 spd with 72k miles so i would guesstimate you would be in the 14k range with under 50k

nope even 4th gen didn't. Though I've never heard 5th gen BOSE stereo so I have nothing to compare with. and Yes with speakers mounted in the rear dash it's sounds way better. a while back I was thinking about cutting holes in my rear dash to put 6x9 speakers but never get my hands to it.

2. purely cosmetic. they will only rust if you don't keep good pads on them, in which case they could get grooved. The Maxima brakes are not great, but if you use good pads (Hawk HPS I suggest) you will not have the material buildup that the stock pads cause (some people call it "warped rotors" but they are WRONG).
3. The Bose is fine, as stock stereos go. Far superior to the stock sets in my previous Honda and Acura. Nothing to write home about though. I mean...it's a stock stereo.
4. fair assessment. At 50k miles, the VQ is just getting broken in

5. no clue...
1. The paint isnt very good, its not as bad as ive seen on some cars but its sure as hell not one of the best, my clear coat is starting to peel a TINY bit. its like 2cm big.
2. its cosmetic nothing to really worry about, as irish said keep some good pads on, i think everyone will reccomend hawk hps i do too!
3.The bose in the 5th gen is pretty good, alot of us have the rear parcel shelf rattle which can be fixed faily easy. No doubt the system in the 4th gen is wayy better, because i have both and i compared.
4. Sounds like a fair assesment, makes sense ive heard stories about the roads in nyc.
5. Theres to many factors that play a role, but just for kicks i paid 15k for my 02 SE Auto and it has 49,000 miles. Its in MINT condition other then a tiny bit of peeling of the clear coat on the bumpber. got it about 2 months ago i think.

This might be the wrong question to ask, seeing as how this is a Maxima forums and all, but what about a Honda Accord EX V6 Coupe? Would that be a better car than a Maxima? I really wasn't considering any other cars until yesterday when I saw an Accord and started thinking about it.
