how far to compress caliper pistons

Should you compress the pistons just far enough to fit over the new pads, or should you compress them as far as possible? I wonder because it seems my new pads are extremely close to the rotor (it rotates freely but just barely).
Thanks.

whenever i put new pads on i compress them all the way as far back as they can so they can fit over the rotor, just pump your brakes before you put it in drive so this will set the right pressure and you wont hit a wall

+1. It doesn't really matter because as soon as you pump your brakes they will go back to normal.

Its a waste of time compressing more than you need to. Pumping the brake will reset to the right pressure.
