are header's and y pipe important?

i want my maxima to breath a little better, when i feel the exhaust blowing out the back of my stock system it comes out only one pipe, is this normal? i just added a free flowing intake, but i want the exhaust free'er flowing. i'd like to add an inch or at least half to the whole system..

i found these headers and y pipe for $280 w/ gaskets and all, they look bolt on

http://www.ssautochrome.com/level.itml/icOid/1433

anyone know if this is good point to start? then what do i change? cats? b pipe and muffler? what's the stock tube 2", i want to keep it at least 2.5" or 3" consistent, is this possible?

its suppose to be a variable muffler or something... theory is that it helps low end torque and when the revs are high enough, a flap opens in the muffler IIRC.

As for headers, I would go with either Hotshot or Cattman from what I hear on the .org. If you are not willing to do the install on it, I would get a cattman y-pipe or stillen y-pipe instead of headers.

That seems awful cheap for headers let alone a y pip included. I know hotshot and cattman are aournd 500-600 just headers alone. Also there would be some drilling in those headers regardless on what that site seed depending on if you had a cali of fed spec max.

Just remember headers and y pipe greatly highten the exhaust note. It is something to think about if you want the added noise. I personally like it but some people complain that there is a drone. My advice is to look through the exhaust sticky and see what you are looking for.

If you have a 2000-2001, just get a Y-pipe, 02-03 need headers for maximum power gain. And the SSautochrome headers have been installed by someone on nycmaximas.org, I believe he said it fit fine.

The exhaust coming out of 1 tip is normal (have someone rev it and you will see both work it only comes on after certain rpm). As for increasing the size of the piping it is probably not a good idea unless you are turbo or supercharged cause you need some backpressure it wont give you any hp might even lose some. And whatever you do, dont get those headers a friend of mine ordered those piece of crap and they had a leak on 2 of the flanges he had to get them re-welded. My suggestion is get the hotshot headers I think they might be on sale for 500 (proven hp and quality). Just my .2 BTW here is the website for hotshots http://www.hotshot.com/hotshotheaders/ns3017.html

Hotshot and Cattman "headers" come with both manifolds and a "y-pipe" piece. And Cattman headers are more like $800.

No, you do not want backpressure. You want exhaust velocity and its not the same thing.

don't get those headers...they look like the stillen ones...which do not give any power gain at all. you will be wasting your money if you get these headers.

the cattman/hotshot headers are better because they have equal manifold runner lengths - meaning the pulses of the exhaust gas match up when they go to the exhaust pipe. this will keep exhaust velocity up and increase power.

I someone has dynoed with the ss autochrome/obx headers and they saw virtually no gains on their vq30, from what i know about ss autochrome and obx is that they are just shiny oem's basically, they arent even equal lenght manifolds like the cattman and hot shots.

You get what you pay for, the reason why guys with vq35's get headers is because their pre-cats are located on the manifolds compared to vq30's where its on the y-pipe. So just get a y-pipe and call it a day.

...Unless of course you have an 00-01 Cali spec. A y-pipe will only remove the rear precat while headers will remove both font and rear.

I was a bit dissapointed with the gains from just a y-pipe (Im Cali spec), which is why I have my Cattman gen 2's on order...... I hope they come in soon

I bought his Cattman muffler LOL.

I have:

Berk intake, Cattman y-pipe, CE test pipe, Frankencar b-pipe, and Cattman muffler.

Steven88 had:

Berk intake, Cattman headers, budget test pipe, Cattman b-pipe, Cattman muffler.
