Exhaust tip install issue

I took my car to Midas this morning after they told me it would cost about $15 to get my Magnaflow 35131 tips welded on.

After taking the SE shrowd off the mechanic said that it would take a lot more time to fit the tips on the muffler. They'd have to use a lot of wire and it would up the cost closer to $100 and it wouldn't look good. There was plenty of gap between the small end of the tips and the pipes exiting the muffler.

How did others have their's installed?

See if they can cut down the old factory tips then weld on the new ones.

Or get a magna flow muffler...

I am looking at one now. You can pick them up on ebay for about $160.

dam i must've gotten ripped off. They charged me 33 when i got my tips put on. They said they could either tack weld them on or i could have tehm take the whole muffler off and have the stock muffler tips flared out wider to fit the tips better (this cost more). So i had them tack weld them and it came out decent.

They cut off the shrowd and put the tips over the old ones and noted the gap between it.

Had they cut off the current outlets and welded on the tips to the muffler it wouldn't had looked any good because you could barely see them.

Also, why would I get a Magnaflow muffler? The muffler is the best part of our exhaust.

The tips don't have to be welded on fully. The guy who installed mine only welded in maybe 3-4 spots. It's been maybe 2 years now and they're still on strong. Again, they don't have to weld all around.

So are they welded on the top of the tip or the bottom?

I'm installing mine tomorrow with my dad. So I will snap a few pictures for you while we are doing it. But like the others said, you just need to tack weld it on after you cet off the stock tips.

Mine were welded on top of the tip and on the sides. The welds don't have to be perfect (unless your really **** about it).

I paid $20 CDN for both tack welded over the stock tips and it looks great. I wouldn't pay more than $30 to have them installed, maybe you should shop around?

What tips are you guy's putting on the 5th gen max? Maxima is not even listed on the Magnaflow website.

Are you using the one designated for the 350Z?

Does anyone have a sound clip?

Thanks in advance...

So, what is the point in putting in tips? Just trying to make it louder, with out really gaining any power? or get laughed at when you people find out that you have tips? For looks? anyways the following is just my opinion.

Personally i wouldent get tips, because if you ever pass a seriouse street car, or street group, you will get laughed at, or told to leave if you try and stop.

Anyway,
Don't get me wrong, do what you can afford, but dont expect much respect unless you do it right.

they're doing it for the look...especially if you have the stillen rear valence. It hides the stock tips so if you get some tips that are bigger it compliments it very well w/o the noise that some people don't want to deal with. the Stock muffler is already great performance wise....why mess with it's performance?

+1 for tips for looks. they don't do anything for performance, and replacing the oem muffler with anything else will not do anything. the 5th get are more restricive in the y+b pipes, not the muffler canister.

Right, I plan on doing other exhaust mods in the future, specifically y and b pipes, but I want tips now. My car is the most stock looking from the rear and I think these tips will improve the look of the car from behind.

Alright progress, I installed my tips yesterday. Here is what we did:
1) We took an air hammer and knocked the old existing tips off.
2) We took one tip and lined it up the best we could and tack welded it on the top. This gave us the flexibility to move it around if it wasn't perfect.
3) Then I got it were I liked the look and then we tack welded it all around, on the bottom it was a little big so my dad took a washer and slide it underneath the tips so it would be flush and then welded the two together
4) Did the same on the other side and just lined it up to match the other side.

Took us like 20 minutes at the most.

Can you get a daylight photo of the tips installed. Kinda dark which makes it look same as OEM.

Thanks, cutter. I'm going to hold on my comments until I can see the pics; Photobucket is blocked at my work.

I think I'm going to take my car to AN off brand exhaust shop to get the work done.

Pri, hook me up with that shop!

I can't open my email either and I can't advertise my work email. It's an oddity that I still get the .org.

I'll just wait until later tonight. Thanks!

Replacing the stock tips with the 35131 magaflow tips was primarily for Anniversary Edition owners to get away from the Infiniti style tips which were pretty

Do it man, I'm just giving you crap that's all. It will look fine, but I do suggest that you make sure you get what you want, and don't let them give you the run around.

Thanks for the pics, cutter and everyone.

I'm taking my car to a shop today after work. Is there anything I should tell them? I guess I can tell them the instructions cutter stated? I just don't want them to charge me too much.

Pics 56K beware

Alright, I got the tips put on. It ended up costing me a little more than I had forecasted and they had to weld a piece of the the b-pipe since it had come off.

Here are the pics:

Here is a close pic of the weld:

It is slightly tilted downward but you can only tell if you get that close up. Otherwise, it looks like the other pics.
