Fun with error codes

Alright, I installed a berk intake on my 02 max about two months ago. During the installation process the black plastic pipe that houses the maf was damaged: I tightened the bolt too hard on one of the corners and the corner piece broke off. I tried to superglue it back on, but it never sat flush with the rest of the assembly. I continued with the installation and there didn't appear to be a problem. 3 weeks ago I got an error code of P0147 and P0139 - oxygen sensor related. I've reset the ecu three times and put the stock airbox back on and I still get the 'service engine soon' light on beween 90 - 300 miles after I reset the ecu. The guy at Autozone seemed to think it was an air leak in my intake and I'm inclined to agree with him considering the damaged maf assembly. Anyone have any experience with this? Also, if that is the problem I need to get a new maf assembly (the black pipe). The MAF doesn't seem to be damaged. It looks like the maf assembly on 00 and 01s is the same as 02-03, just different maf. The reason I ask is the 00-01 assembly (plus maf) is $100 compared to $450 for 02-03. Can I buy the 00-01 assembly and replace that maf with mine?

I don't think there is a P0147... but P0139 is for the Bank 1 (rear) downstream sensor...

Yes. And if you decide to use the sensor, you'll have to transfer the IAT thermistor from your existing MAF to the 01 MAF. More details in the How-Tos somewhere.

The printout I got from autozone says: "P0147 The pcm has determined that a malfunction exists in the heater circuit for oxygen sensor 3 in bank 1." Does it sound like that could be caused by an intake air leak? Trying to avoid taking it to a mechanic if I can fix it myself...warranty just ran out about 1500 miles ago (of course).

I think its means P1147, which is a code for the rear heated O2. And yes, intake leaks are listed as a possible cause, as well as:

Harness or connectors (The sensor circuit is open or shorted.)
Heated oxygen sensor 2
Fuel pressure
Injectors

FYI, the Autozone code readers have different codes from Nissan sometimes...

No P0147 found in the Nissan FSM for a 2002 Maxima:

Hey man, thanks for the help. I think I'm gonna buy an 00-01 maf assembly. If that doesn't work I'll take it in. Do you know of anywhere that just sells the plastic piping or am I going to have to buy the whole thing (already checked local salvage yards, no help there)?

So you're absolutely sure it has nothing to do with the O2 sensor itself?

If you're sure its the MAF, then call Dave Burnette (1-888-254-6060) and just buy the 2001 MAF (and swap in your IAT). That's a better MAF anyway.

If you want to look for it at junkyards, try www.car-part.com.

I don't know for sure its not the o2 sensor...I don't know of any way to check besides replacing it and seeing if the light comes back on. I guess I thought it could be an intake problem because it took between 90-300 miles to pop the error code after I reset the ecu. I admit to not knowing too much about o2 sensors, just seemed like too much of a coincidence to have a damaged maf pipe and also have that error code. If it is the o2 sensor this car is starting to become more trouble than its worth. I've only had it 4 months and had the transmission replaced (under warranty, 3rd gear 'crunch') and now an o2 sensor. If its a bad o2 due to me putting on an intake, then I guess I don't have much to complain about. Either way I thought getting a 00-01 maf piping for around $100 would be cheaper than going the o2 route. Is there a way of specifically checking for the o2 sensor?
