After 5 months my painted Gunmetal OEM 17s look like......

So about 5 months back I had some discoloration on my OEM 17s and so I painted them Gunemtal with a silver lip.

I posted this thread on how I did it with a few pics.

There were some questions on how they would hold up to the elements especially being in Northen Illinois with all the snow, ice and salt. I went and took some pics of what they look like now and did a very good inspection. I have found that honestly they are doing much better than I expected. On all four wheels there is only one small chip that is the size of your " on your keyboard. The chip seems to be through all clearcoats and gunmetal coats to the OEM color underneath. I ran my fingernail over it to see if it would flake off anymore but it held fast and shows no sign of flaking off anymore. I think it is a result of an impact of a rock or other debris but not just "peeling off". The wheels are still very smooth to the touch and very reflective so the clearcoats are doing there job. There is no cracking of the paint at all.

These rims have seen multiple snowfalls which means multiple salts and temperatures below 0 and we have had a few days in the upper 90s. For the $15 and about 4 hours I spent, most of the time was waiting in between coats, I am very satisfied with the results. I feel that as long you prep your rims by sanding them, do at least 5 thin and light coats of paint, 3 coats of clearcoat and follow the instructions on the paint and far as the timing of the coats you can get excellent results.

But here are the results

Here is the one with the chip

Not too bad. Looks like it stood up pretty well.

The stuff does stand up well, I just got sick of it and got the silver paint and re-did them a few weeks ago.

I am happy to have my silver rims back.

BTW, I had mine for a full year and they looked perfect still.
