Can't top certain speed - is this normal?

Guys,

Question for you, I have a 2000 Maxima GLE (Auto). Have the 17" 2003 SE wheels on it with the stock potenza tires.

Noticed that no matter what I can't go over 160kmph with the car (around 99.4 miles per hour).

Is this normal?

Thanks

Definitely not normal. (unless Canadian maximas have a special speed limiter or something)

Can you rev to the redline when the car in in "park."

USDM Maximas have a governer that limits speed around 123mph. Like DR.K said, do you have a different governer?

Definately not normal.

I can easily hit 200km/h in my ride..

Its also an 02 though, dont know if they would have moved up the governor..would seem kind of strange to me.

ever have the shi.ts real bad and it hits you right in the middle of a no-service station county? That's when you start goin 200... that kinda job doesnt allow for pulling over and unloading in the bushes.. youre going to be needing some heavy duty toilet paper.

anyway, why can't you get to high speeds? do you lose power at a certain rpm?

Also, governors are only placed on cars capable of speeds well over 150MPH - usually on high performance European cars. the governor is a requirement to import them to the US...

This is why you should ALWAYS carry toilet paper and plastic bags in the trunk just for that reason. The reason for the plastic bags is for "surprising" the road crews when they pick up trash.

LOL you guys kill me, thanks for the responses. No need really to go that fast, was just concerned. Seems like between 60-80 there's power loss, I'll try the redline test in a bit.

What happens if I can't redline? Thanks again.

If the RPMs increase very slowly or do not increase at all after a certain point in the RPM range, than it's most likely your mass airflow sensor. (obviously, if the RPMs do not climb in neutral they are not ganna climb in the fourth gear.)

It's like the right to bear arms, we have police and a military, and a congress and other factions of government to make sure the military doesn't get out of hand, so no one really needs a gun, but it's nice to be able to own one if you want. Just like no one needs to go over 75 mph (fastest speed limit in the U.S.) but it's nice to have the option, if you so choose.

Out west, I believe IN Montana you can go as fast as you want during the day. NO SPEED LIMIT...Whens the next meet there?

its one thing to put your own life in danger, but to do it when other people are on the road is retarded, it wont be such a great idea when someone is suing your *** for ruining the rest or their life. maybe its alright to do it once really late at night just to see, but to do it more than that is pointless.

I've driven thru Montana, still have yet to find that highway. However the state is so big, with so few cops that it would be hard to get popped for speeding.

So according to you all people living in counties that do not have speed limits (many European countries) are retarded and they all ruin their lives.

I think we should take a que from the Euros. Their autobahns can have people going 60mph and 170mph all on the same road. Why? Because people there know how to drive. They pass left, get over right. The roads are impecably maintained and the rules are clear and followed. You can die in a 60mph crash and you can live through a 110mph crash. I think roads should be improved and speed limits rasied. It is possible to safely go 140mph just like it's possible to dangerously go 35mph. It depends on many conditions including traffic, weather, road design and maintenance.

Some info on the Autobahn: http://gettingaroundgermany.home.att.net/autobahn.htm

(BTW, sorry to be off topic from the original poster, but I've got to find some way to get to 5 posts so I can go into the for sale/want to buy section and post a WTB add for a Maxima. I can't post newbie questions cause that's what the stickies and search bar are for and I can't comment too much on stuff cause I don't have a Maxima so I can't relate....yet. Hopefully about a week or two and I'll have my self a Maxima!)

lol this topic has really jumped off the tracks, but to go with whats going on. US has the worst drivers in the world imo. if you ever travel to the asian counties like china you will see how they drive, they are crazy drivers, yet while i was there for about a week and half i only saw 2 car accidents that whole time i was there. they are crazy driver but have the skills to drive over there while taking any american over to china and give them a car, and they will never get out of that street cause they will cause an accident. as i said before america is one of the counties with the worst drivers ever

That's funny, because Asians have the worst reputation as drivers in this country.

I lived in Europe for several years, and drove in damn near every country in Eastern and Western Europe....I never encountered those mythical roads that "do not have speed limits." In truth, traffic for the most part travels slower on the highway in America, since the great majority of people are driving small, low-powered econocars like Fiats that really don't do too well over about 60-70mph. There are really not THAT many fast cars in Europe....with fuel prices there people usually buy for fuel economy. Sure, speed limits are not really enforced in most areas, but the same could be said for Montana....

I drove on both the Autobahn and the Italian Autostrade on many occasions...Usually going about 80mph or so in my Lancia. I'd say only one out of every 30 cars I encountered passed ME...usually a high-end sedan (Alfa Romeo 164, BMW, Benz).

What we always used to say, living in Italy: "There are only two kinds of wrecks on Italian highways: fender-benders at tollbooths, and TOTAL DEMOLITION".....I saw many, many deadly accidents during my time there - far more than I've seen living in Washington DC, with our crazy Beltway.

well thats cause of stupid teenage asians that think they are cool by fixing up anything and ricing the living crap out of that car and have 10 tone color car then they go and race and give the good asian people a bad rep. i bet if you send a majority of american's to china to drive around they would be considered the worst drivers in the world over there cause of how skilled the people are in china or any asian country that drives like how the chinese do, as i have only seen chinese people drive since ive been there a couple times and sat in taxies that scare the living **** out of me

So DukeN do you have a different governer than USDM Maximas? Does your car redline in park? When it's running open the hood and look at the VIAS (black box directly in front of the throttle body) on the underside of the black box there is an actuator, rev it to 5k rpm does the actuator move? Does the engine sound as if its getting more air? Answer these questions and it'll be easier to diagnose. Look at this http://www.cardomain.com/ride/763858/5

the thing about north america is that no one knows what the hell anyone else is doing, and no one follows the rules. in europe, the drivers follow rules. in China, it may look crazy, but there is a system and people follow the rules. Here, people do whatever the hell they want and that's how people die...

anyway, if the car runs fine, but is just not able to get up to high speeds, I wouldn't worry about it.. you'd be wasting money fixing something that you wont often take advantage of. If you're having trouble with reving and power loss though, that's different..

you're in Canada. Please don't confuse Canadians with Americans. That's like going up to a German and accusing him of being French!
