Is it a humming noise or a squealing/squeaking/grinding noise? Details please.

humming = bad tire... replace it if you cannot stand the sound.

A little more information may help here. Does it sound mechanical (like metal grinding) or is it a noise you feel is actually coming from the tire itself?

Move the problem wheel/tire to the other side. Does the sound move? Yes- bad wheel/tire. No- bad wheel bearing.

Its a sqeaking, grinding sound. The tires it self is not making noise, its the rotors or some thing. When I unscrewd the nuts, I move the tire foward and its the metal part behind the wheel. What kind of problem is that? How much to fix?

you mean the dust shield? If so, just bend it back so it's not hitting the rotor. You need to be more specific...there are alot of metal parts behind the wheel..

also, are you sure that your rear pads are not worn down? The wear indicator on pads will scrape against the outer rim of the rotor if the pads are low, causing a grinding/squeaking sound.

I would have to aggree with 9DTALON and say it is most likely a wheel bearing. I have had one out on my Evolution before-it made the noise you are talking about. Did it increase as your speed increases?? If so definetly wheel bearing. If not look into other options. Wheel bearings are pretty cheap and easy to fix, quick job.

I don't know....usually wheel bearings go bad progressively. Initially he would be hearing a low "moan". Then it would progress to more of a louder "roar." If a wheel bearing gets to the point that it is making a scraping sound, the bearings are completely shot and could seize up at any moment. Unlikely he could even spin the wheel by hand easily if that were the case. I would think he would have noticed a noise before. Then again, I've already replaced 3 bearings on this damn maxima, and the front right is getting loud again...so my ear is more tuned to it than most people maybe....

Either way, he needs to be more specific as to where the sound is coming from. It's pretty easy to figure out the difference in location of a noise in the rear, especially if related to the rotation of the wheel. Just put the car up, take the wheel off, and spin the hub around until you can pinpoint the sound.

Until he's checked the dust shield and brake pads, though, he should not mess with the bearing quite yet. Could also be that a caliper is seized, and the brake pads are dragging

All I did was spin the wheel around after i took out the nuts, and it makes the noise. I cant pin point it though. This problem was very instantly. When i made a turn, it started from there.

You are definetly right, and most likely have a much more tuned ear to these kind of things. I just really remember my blown bearing noise, I can still hear it. But after thinking it over more it could be more than just that, so I would take the car to a dealer and see what they say, expect it to be on the lines of what has been suggested. If its not let us know what they said, hopefully you wont get ripped off.

what do you mean "after I tood out the nuts"?

Do you meant the wheel was OFF the car? If not, you need to take the wheel off the car, and then put your ear down there near the hub and spin it....There are only three real possibilities, as have been mentioned above:
1. bearing (sound will come from center of hub)
2. brake pads (sound will come from brake pad wear indicator)
3. dust shield (sound will come from the backside of the rotor).

If it goes away when you apply the brakes, it's your pads. This just happened to me. If it doesn't go away and continues to grind, it's your dust shield behind the rotor.

if it doesnt go away after pressing the brakes, then as NYPD-ARNOLD said it is most likely the dust shield, and as irish44j said all you have to do is bend it back out of the way. This should be easily done by yourself.

I just got back from a local dealer. They told me it was the disc calipers. Now he is charging me $290 for everything (caliper, pads and some other stuff) Now I told him I would have to look in my booklet to see if I'm covered under the extended warrenty. So it clearly states that my warrenty covers the braking system. So my calipers are covered. However, he said they would have to call monday morning and get an approval from the warrenty number that is provided in my booklet. I also have a $50 deductable. If everything is free, I will get both done.

tha Amityville Horror, for sure......

So what did he SAY about the "disc calipers"??

Seized up? Need to be rebuilt? Had worn the pads down to nothing?

They seized up........couldn't move the tire. I hope everything is covered. It should be. It says in my booklet that disc calipers are covered.

Thank goodness it wasn't the "drum calipers" cause those are never covered under warranty. LOL jk glad to hear you have an extended warranty.
