I would like to install another airfilter in my max besides the stock one, and am considering the K&N drop in for the time being (that's not to say I might not further upgrade later on). My question is to all those who have had experience with this filter on their Max; How much hp increase if any is obtainable by the K&N?? I know for other cars its good for about 3hp.

My other alternative is the hi-flow intake by stillen, but have heard that it can be loud at times?? I don't mind slightly louder, but do not want obnoxiously loud? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Get the K&N drop in and do the OSCAI mod (See stickies and search) and then you will surely feel a gain in performance The K&N alone may be good for maybe a few hp and better throttle response.

With the K&N alone, would you say between 2-5, or 5-7 increase in horses??

I will also consider the oscai.

Thanks

It is hard to say, but definitely not 5-7......maybe 2-3?

Import Tuner magazine measured a 4 HP increase from the K&N drop-in. It was in the April or May issue I believe.

Yup. But there's no reason to do a K&N without doing the OSCAI conversion. If what you're looking for is closer to 5-7hp, you'll need the OSCAI to accomplish that. Going to an underhood intake like the Stillen or JWT Popcharger won't provide a better performance increase than an OSCAI/K&N Panel Filter combo. And any underhood intake will be far noisier than the OSCAI.

I just placed an order for the K&N filter. The one that was written about in the magazine (see above) says high flow on the box. I ordered the part number 33-2031-2, which I found by doing a search on my car. Does anyone know if the one I ordered is the same as the one being referred to in the turbo mag which is good for 4 hp? I think they are the same as only one air filter came up for the 2001 Maxima after I ran the search engine on my car's criteria.

installed one yeterday

..I noticed the better throttle response for sure. the car felt slightly zippier without a doubt.

with 18,000 miles on my original stock filter, it was already rather black in a few spots. is that by chance a sign of something nasty going on under the hood? the car is one year old

I wouldn't worry. My stock filter was pretty nasty after 7.5k miles. I think replacing the filter (or cleaning it if you have a K&N) should be done after 10k miles anyways....
