I bought a bottle of engine cleaning spray from the auto store and followed the instructions. Basically, cover up the battery, alternator, and intake area and you can spray down any part of the engine with a garden hose. Then spray on the engine cleaner. Let sit for a while. Hose off. Engine will be sparkling clean.

In fact, I was very nervous about washing up the engine, but I just did that last week and I had no problems whatsoever in starting the car afterwards. In fact, I thought it was pretty neat when you start the engine afterwards and steam comes out from the hood! It gives the illusion of an overheating engine.

Make sure you get a cleaner that is environmentally safe.
