Are the 6th gen rotors worth it?

I think my rotors may be a slightly warped, so I'm considering picking up Matt's kit for the 6th gen rotors. But for those who have purchased the kit, do you feel it is worth the extra $150 for the brackets? I know Matt's a stand up guy (when he lived in Tulsa, I stopped by his house and he replaced the bushing on my old 3rd gen) I'm just wondering if you feel a real difference in braking, considering your still using the stock caliper?

Also, does anyone know if these same brackets will work if I upgrade to 300zx brakes later down the road?

yeah, I thought it was worth it - though frankly it's MORE worth it to get the 6th gen rotors + 6th gen calipers...then you don't need brackets, it bolts right up. The calipers can be found used for about the price of the brackets anyhow and the 6g calipers have alot more power and pad area (and look nicer) if you're not worried about the extra unsprung weight

I'm not sure if the brackets are the same - I sold by OEM caliper/6g rotor brackets before getting the 300zx brackets. They do look similar, but might have a different offset....

Hmmm... I never thought about getting the 6th gen calipers, but I assume they are still lacking compared to the 300zx brakes right? Oh, and will they fit under the 5.5 gen stock wheels?

I just looked around on Autozone.com and it looks like the 6th gen calipers would be cheaper then getting the brackets and using the 5th gen clipers. Hmmmm........ sounds good to me.

But will they fit under my wheels or will I have clearance issues. My Max came with 5.5 gen stockers.

I have 17" wheels. I have the 2002-2003 stock 17" wheels.

But I did some searching and found a thread that Irish had on installing this kit. I'm pretty sure he said they wouldn't clear my 5.5 gen stock 17's.

Can anyone confirm this?

they wont clear 5th gen (2000-2001) but they will BARELY fit 5.5th gen(2002-2003) they will have like a nickel clearence between the caliper and the rim..

They will clear YOUR SE 17's, just not the 00-01, which are a bit different. Even with yours the clearance is tight and I would suggest maybe some 5mm spacers...

Hmmm.... Well, does anyone know if the 28mm 300zx brakes will clear these same rims. I just found out my buddy has a set laying around.

no, they won't even come close, even with spacers. You need at minimum a 35mm offset on the wheels with an outside-spoke design....

Well, that's still an option and I might do that until I save up the cash and find some new wheels.

I really want the 300zx brakes, but I need to do something for the moment.

Hawk HPS pads....definite upgrade

Brembo blanks....no upgrade at all. They don't provide any additional stopping power compared to OEM Nissan rotors, nor any other performance upgrade. The only upside to Brembo rotors is that they're less expensive than stock. That's it. This "brembo rotors are better than others" is a big misperception. Plenty of people have warped them.

Heck, we pulled the 4 new Brembo rotors off Cutler's accord and went back to his old stock rotors, since the Brembos just would not bite as hard

Brembo's are cheaper and less likely to warp...doing an entire brake overhaul could definately be a good thing for braking feel but it doesn't always make a difference in real world hard stop scenarios which is why I suggested them. If he's looking to upgrade because he wants to stop faster he better do his homework...if he's upgrading because he wants improved pedal response and a better feel than I say go for it.

New calipers for a 6th gen at the dealer are 78$ ea. If you can get a good deal on some rotors and pads, i've got to say it is an awesome upgrade. The best thing I've done to my car so far.

Does anyone have specific weights on the 02/3 rotors vs the 04+?

I still have my old set, so maybe I'll weigh them later today, compare, and post results.

I looked online and Autozone has the 6th gen calipers of around $46 each. I don't see the problem with going with those.

I think they usually sell reman only at autozone. If they are new that is a good deal. I went with the Nissan ones because they are new, and being an employee I got them for closer to the Autozone price.

Right! The 6th gen calipers won't clear 01 stock wheels. The rotors and brackets will clear.

the brackets will clear any type of wheels. the rotors will clear 00-01 wheels while the calipers will only clear 02-03 wheels.
