Broken Valve Cover Bolt
Broken Valve Cover Bolt
I was replacing my valve cover due to a problem with oil getting into one of the spark plugs. When tightening the bolts I managed to break one of the bolts at where the threading starts. I have filled that area (around the gasket)with some gasket dressing to try to avoid oil leaking out. Is this something I should be worried about or do you think I'm OK? Is there an easy way to take the broken portion out? I'd like to get some of your opinions based on past experiences. Any input is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Thanks!
go to sears and get a bolt extracter set. If you can grab onto it at all use a pair of vicegrips.
Also you may want to invest in a torque wrench, craftsman sells a relatively cheap one and it's accurate within I think 4-5%.

If you don't torque the bolts down the cover will end up warping and leaking again. My guess is that those bolts are inch pounds. (probably alot less torque than you would think)
Thanks for the advise! I've been kicking myself for not buying a torque wrench BEFORE I did this ever since I broke the damn bolt. I just picked up a bold extracter and a torque wrench (to avoid doing the same thing again). Is there anything I should do/not do with the bold extracter so I don't mess things up worse/tricks I should use to minimize frustration? I've never done this before.....
Thanks!

Also read the directions; IIRC, the drill bit and extractor side are reverse threaded so the extractor doesn't unscrew during removal. IF this is the case make sure your drill is in reverse.
