WTF!!! Fuel door issue!

Happy Sunday boys!

Has this ever happened to any of you? If so, what caused this?

So I get out of my car a couple of days ago, walk towards the trunk and noticed that my fuel door was not flush with the car. Last weekend, when I fueled up and didn't notice anything unusual.

So, I pressed the fuel door release button, the door opened up and I tried to reclose it but it would not close. I have no freakin idea how this happened and I am pissed! I got the door to close but its not flush and today I needed to fuel up and the freakin door won't open.

My plan is to just remove the door and place a locking fuel cap on there until I can figure out what the issue is.

In the meantime, I wanted to know if any of you have experienced this before and how you have handled it.

thanks for your time and knowledge.

Chris

Go Eagles!!!!!!!

I think its people trying to get into the gas tank. look closely around the edge of the fender, are there pry marks or missing paint or anything? that happened to me, mine has never really closed perfectly but it worked ok, once in a while it stuck when i'd push the button- left my car overnight at work one night, next day the door is all bent and theres paint chipped off around the edge and the fuel door.

WOW!

Thanks man for getting back to me.

There are chips around the edges. I was looking for that and did notice that. My question is why? Why the **** would someone want to get into my fuel tank? Sabatoge? I mean damn, I'm not mobster so I can't see someone wanting to off me.

Between all of the ******* dents, scratches and dings from aszholes hitting my car now this bullsh!t!?! After I noticed this I have decided to fix this and get rid of the car. Pisses me off that you can't have anything now days from people just being careless.

I need a good bodyshop (in the Philly area) if anyone knows someone that will not rape me.

$3/gal gas and/or vandalism (pour sawdust or some other junk into your tank) I randomly got an egg to the middle sliding window of a truck i owned a few years back. My family somehow turned it into a college rivalry thing cuz i had a UT sticker back there. (funny how the tint on that window on the truck was so dark you'd have to shine a light in to see it back there)

Hmm, that's no trick and I certainly ain't laughing about it. I called the dealership or whatever you call them whor3s these days. They want $50 for the part and will charge me $75 just to paint the b!tch. I guess i will be going to the junkyard over the weekend.

geez! You can't have **** in this world!

I noticed the same thing on my 02 a couple of months ago. No noticeable vandalism or tampering. The forward lower edge is no longer flush.

This sounds like a case of tampering. But watch out when you fill your car with gas. Make sure the nozzle isn't pushing against the filler door or else it will bend the latching device and the door won't shut or open properly. This happened to me and I had to bend it back to work again.

This happened to me too recently, and it's really weird.

I just got the car about a month ago, and I know for a fact the door was flush. My car is parked in a relatively safe neighborhood. I dont get why someone would try to steal my gas.

I'm going to look at it closer this weekend.

Though I do agree that stealing gas out of a maxima is rather strange, particularly because the fuel door is opened from the inside and the tank is only 18 gallons, gas theft all around is not uncommon. The new Chevy Avalanche has a fuel door you simply pull open, untwist the gas cap, and then you have access to a 31 gallon gas tank, when gas is 3+ dollars a pop, do the math, nearly $100 worth of gas if you're good at siphoning. Not that this is typically something to re-sell, still useful to any theif. Although I have never heard of someone being able to just pry an electronic fuel door open?

Gas theft is becoming extremely common. There were news stories a few months ago here in the Bay Area about people stealing gas from trucks (they noted the F150). Thieves would crawl under the truck, drill a hole in the tank and empty it. The owners had to replace the entire gas tank. One guy reported that this happened to his truck twice in one month. Unfortunately, the thieves haven't been blown up yet in the process but I have my fingers crossed.

Nissan gas tank doors just plain out suck. Me and my cousin each own an AE and have had a problem with the warping fuel door hinge. Although I think mine was caused by the system in the trunk, pressuring the fuel door. Only reason why I say that is because another cousin of mine owns a Pathfinder with a 4,000 watt system and recenlty after he noticed his fuel door was bulging out, not flush with the vehicle. My other cousin recently purchased his AE and the fuel door was bulging out of place as well, and the previous owner must have had a powerful system in the trunk as well, (power cable, ground and RCA's were left behind). Just thought I may add to this for those who have extreme audio sounds in the trunk. Not sure if that is the case for @ngrym@xim@ if he had a system or not, but that could have possibly played a part in it if he does have subs/amp. Good luck, I still have not fixed my fuel door as it still is about an inch off of looking flush on the vehicle. Or could just be the old warped hinge thing. I know when I use to fuel up, my fuel door would make an annoying squeak, applied wd40 a few times to get rid of it, but I'm guessing too with all the grinding of the hinges, it may have gotten out of place.

It seems you have some work to do on that hinge if it's an entire inch from flush... Btw, I dont think a powerful system would do that.

Yeah, I'm betting that not enough air could get sealed inside the fuel door to make it pop out from expansion.

My 2k2 has the ole' rusty hinge too. I haven't looked but can't you just replace the hinge and keep the existing painted door?
