Which OBD2 Scanner to Buy

Which OBD2 Scanner to Buy
I was looking into purchasing an OBDII scanner for my 5th & 4th Gen. Maximas. Also it would be very convenient if I could switch the adapter and be able to use it on Mazda & Honda which are other cars in the family. Could someone please suggest which scanner to go with. From what I've heard, some of the cheaper once do not pick up all of the codes. I don't mind mine paying a few hundreds of bucks as long as the product is going to do everything I need it to do. Please advice on a few different models if you have any sort of experience with them. Thank you very much to everyone in advance.

Some have more features (like the ability to store codes).
I have an Innova timing light (same brand as the scanner you
are looking at) and have never had a problem with it.

It did not come with any adapters. I believe the OBD II connector
is universal and therefore adapters should not be necessary.

They all serve the same purpose. If you only care about reading codes any odb II scanner will work. The only difference is what protocal they read.
LAN, CAN, ISO, etc.
Can bus is on ALL vehicles starting in 07 or 08.
Most Japanese vehicles (Pre-CAN) use ISO, so if you're not to concerned with compatability with all vehicles ISO should be sufficient.
Personally, I would buy one that accepted all protocols.

I would also look into Auterra:

UpRev's Cipher is great too, but it is Nissan/Infiniti specific:

A bunch of people here have Autoengenuity:

As long as it supports all protocols. Some of the cheaper ones don't support CAN, so if you plan on keeping this for a while you may want to make sure it does.

auteltech geniscan gs400
I purchased BR-3 scanner couple years ago which hooks up to latptop serial port. I am happy with it but dragging the laptop every couple of days to the car started getting old.
So I picked up Geniscan GS400 from ebay. It does all protocol including the new CAN and also gives you freeze frame data. It is claimed to have upgradeable firmware. The build quality is very good. It has backlighted screen and ability to save upto 14 readings for later viewing. It also supports reading the inspection/monitor data which is very hand if your state does emission testing. I wish it did live monitoring but for that I can use my BR-3 scanner.
I am happy with the Geniscan GS400 scanner. It is about $100 but definitely worth it. I keep it in the car and monitor the pending codes with it.
Currently, I am struggling with P1320 i.e. ignition coil code. I get P1320 almost every single day but no cylinder specific code. But one day, I was able to get both P1320 and P0304 codes and they were both pending. Interestingly, when the check engine light did come on, the P0304 code was not there!
Without having my own scanner permanently in the car, I would have never found that I could only replace cylinder 4 coil and get away with it.
I wholeheartedly recommend GS400. It is made by auteltech.com

Consult 3 is coming out in a month or so. See if a dealership is able to part out with a consult 2 as they will start to collect dust in a while as the consult 1. So if they have 2-3 in a shop a service manager might sell yoiu one. But you have to look around.
