Service Engine Light

I'm trying to find the error code that's causing my SES light to go on, but none of these instructions work for me. Have these instructions worked for anyone?

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....95#post3116895

1) Move shifter to Park
2) Start engine and let it warm up to normal operating temperature (please do this in an open-air environment, so as not to risk serious injury or death)
3) Turn key to the OFF position
4) Wait 5 seconds
5) Turn key to the IGNITION position, but do not start car
6) A/T CHECK light should come on for about 2 seconds
7) Turn key to the OFF position
8) Turn key to the ACC position
9) Press and hold the accelerator pedal to the floor (100% WOT)
10) Press brake pedal and move shifter into Drive (D)
11) Turn key to the IGNITION position (DO NOT START THE CAR)
12) Wait 3 seconds
13) Move shifter to 2nd gear
14) Release gas and brake pedal
15) Move shifter to 1st gear
16) Press and hold the brake pedal
17) Press and release the gas pedal
18) The A/T CHECK light should flash ON and OFF - Refer to the chart below for explanation of the flashes. Depending on the sequence and timing of the flashes, you can determine what problem, if any, the TCM is reporting.
19) After discovering what the problem is, put the shifter in Park and turn off the car
20) When you turn on the car, the TCM will be reset. You may need to reset the ECU to clear any SES codes that are stored.

i believe that is to show error codes for the TCM (Transmission control module) To check the SES light error codes, you have to follow these instructions:
http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/ecu.asp
Do steps 1-5. Release the gas pedal when the SES light starts blinking..also this sticky might be of use as well:

EDIT: Also for me it works best to count the time off by hand..EX(1 mississippi, 2 mississippi...etc)

Have you tried getting the codes read by Autozone for FREE? Report back here with a code for further troubleshooting.

Totally. All that manual code reading stuff is a PITA. Autozone is the place to be when your SES light comes on!

Exactly what the code narrative said, replace it. Just kidding.

Retighten your gas cap, and do the ECU reset procedures in the Stickies. This should solve it.

I tightened the cap and got some fuel injector cleaner. That code is only a gas cap problem?

It could be several things. The gas cap is where to start at.

Hopefully that fixes it. Read this thread below. It has happened to Steve before and this is how he fixed it.
