Y-pipe Questions/Concerns

What's up everybody. I have a 2001 automatic Maxima SE with a Stillen hi-flow intake, and I was thinking about adding a cattman y-pipe to the mix but I had two concerns:

1. I absolutely love the noise that the intake alone makes upon acceleration, and I don't want the y-pipe to make anymore noise on top of that. Will it? All I want is the extra power. I plan on keeping the rest of the exhaust stock by the way.

2. I was talking about this in another thread, but it seems to have disappeared off the face of the planet.. lol.. but someone was saying that with the addition of the y-pipe, I would lose some low end torque. Has anyone else found this to be true? It says I should get a power increase through the whole power band.

Help me out here guys because these things arent cheap, and I wanna make the right decision.. lol.. thanx.

Have you tried looking in the Exhaust sound clips sticky?

with the stock catback and cat, there won't be to much extra noise.

You might notice it alitle more at high rpms, but the noise of the intake will still be way louder.

I really cant hear my cattman ypipe at all besides maybe at like 2500rpms I hear it slightly above a whisper. I have frankencar intake and cattman ypipe. I think I also felt a slight loss of power in the low end, but it more then makes up for it past 3k rpm mark

You will not notice any difference in noise, and if there is, you will be the only person to notice. I had full headers on my 3.5L with stock cat back and cat, and there is no noise increase, only to the trained ear. And yes, the intake will be much louder than the adition of the y-pipe.

No dyno has ever been proven to show y-pipes affecting low-mid RPM power.

I have Frankencar intake with Cattman b-pipe and y-pipe with stock muffler and the exhaust makes a little lower sound than stock, but not very noticable. I can still hear the intake. At WOT, my setup sound great. BTW, I have not noticed that much difference between stock and my set up on the strip. That's my experience ...

i wouldnt mind a little extra growl in the higher rpms.. cause when the transmission downshifts and the rpms are around like 5 or 6,000 the engine kinda sounds like a normal one even with the intake.. im like come on where'd my growl go!? lol.. then it changes gears and im like ahhh there it is but yeah.. it would would be nice if i could move through second gear a little faster with that y-pipe also without having to downshift to first to get decent acceleration after turning a corner

trust me...the y-pipe will give you a nice deep growl.
on my 00, i heard the intake at about 3K then the y-pipe a little higher. together, it was a nice sound because it built up as i speed up

It is louder when you give it...Mind you I love it and was weary of going with a b and hi flo but now I got the short arm, Y/B pipe and hi flo cat, stock muffler and I love it!!!! My friends tell me when I gun it, it sounds very intimidating. When cruising it sounds stock until you stomp on it. I love it

If the cat is making a rattling noise, it's probably shot to death. Rattling measn it has broken apart inside the housing.

what about the "power loss" in the low end? is it just a rumors around or had proven on the dyno? thanks.

ha, i clicked that link thinking it was going to take me to another thread.

y pipe is a just a tad louder and deeper than stock. intake will make more of a sound difference. IMO, intake + y + b pipe sounds nice. intake + y will give you more of a stock sound, unless you floor it, then you'll hear a nice sound, otherwise, its pretty quiet. with the intake + y + b pipe, you will hear the car make more noise all the time. I personally like it because its not as loud as any catback i ever heard, but it stills sounds aggressive.

I remember the days when i just had a Berk intake (a lot louder than just replacing the airbox because it also removes the intake resonator), I thought it was the coolest thing ever when i mashed it in third gear.

But then I got my cattman muffler (it's supposed to be the loudest bolt on out there) it was actually pretty quiet, just a little louder than stock. But when I replaced the rest of the exhaust (y-pipe, cat, b-pipe) it was loud as hell.

I blame most of it on the y-pipe. I think it takes away a lot of the noise. (also due to a test-pipe and larger b-pipe.

but you running the stock muffler and stock b-pipe should still be rather quiet.

This might sound funny, but the only differance I noticed is that it sounds like the exaust is in stereo ( at WOT ). I know it sounds ridiculous, but that is what it reminds me of.
