I am trying to decide between a 2001 Maxima and a 2001 Audi A4 1.8T. Out of the box I think a maxima is quicker but with a chip in the Audi, I am not sure. Has anyone raced a Audi A4 1.8T?

You can't go wrong with the Max and you'll save money too.

chip in audi will schmoke a Max .. but u gotta ask yourself .. what do u want? pure speed?

Max is:

1. Bigger
2. cheaper (so u can mod)
3. Doesn't have the problems that have plagued VW & Audi over the years .. not so much lately but I've still heard horror stories ..

Audi is:

1. Bit more stylish (but still 2 small 4 me)
2. More high-profile (4 lack of a better word)
3. Quicker if modded & probably a lot better around the curves ...
4. See my #3 under "Max is:"

let us know what u eventually do ... ciao

Thanks guys, So you think a chipped Audi will beat a maxima? I love the looks of both cars but I am leaning towards the Audi because of the fact it is a little smaller. I am currently in a 1998 Prelude so it is a step up in size either way.

I would much rather have a strong V-6, than a 1.8 4cyl turbo. More reliable, no turbo-lag, longer life ......

You have my opinion, go for the max.

After owning the Maxima I think I would go A4 if I had the chance again.

I'd prolly go for the A4. AWD and tons of fun tuning options for the loveable 1.8t engine. Max Power did a great write-up this month on the engine. Contrary to the statement previous in the thread, this engine has very little turbo lag. My GF has the 1.8t Golf and it's a zippy lil bugger. Just wish it had the Audi Quattro.

Definately drive both and go with whichever one feels better. If you decide on the max, I'd wait for the 2k2s to come out.

I have both!

Ur in, luck i have a stock 00'Max SE 5pd and 00'A4 5spd 2wd with a 1 bar chip and custom exhaust. Both have 18" wheels, i have to say A4 "feels" faster in my configuration, but the maxima maybe "truly" faster. I cant race with my self but these are my seat of the pants feel after owning both for more than a year. Handling-wise, the maxima is way-better and stock suspension in an A4 just plain sucks, but rides like a cadillac.

However, dont get either now, wait for the 02' 260hp Max, and the brand new A4 later this year. The current A4 has NO back seat.

John.

Go for the Max....imagine a 2hour trip in the A4......
ok, you're done....now imagine that same trip in the Max.......humm, more head and legroom....remember, cramped back folks tend to get agitated and become backseat drivers very quickly! Allout speed shouldn't be the deciding factor, if it was get the new Z! I have a 4 and 2 year old, need the room......I can hold my own if any A4 comes my way, chipped or not. Well, no matter what you decide upon, get the 2002 model....don't ask us 2k or 2k1 owners why, we want to sleep well.

I do and would not want to come into contact with a chipped/exhaust 1.8T.

The 2002 A4 is really nice. 220 HP V6 and the same 170 HP 1.8. Be careful about chipping. Many VW/Audi dealers are wise to it and it's becoming a problem for some people seeking warranty repairs. Beware of the DV failure problems. Some people go with an aftermarket diverter valve to solve that problem.

Fit, finish, and ride are better than Maxima. The Maxima has the edge on reliability and maintenance.
