Has anyone used this code reader?:http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=46030

Does it clear SES lights?

It looks likes it just "reads" the codes. I don't see any buttons or settings where you can clear it. Maybe, that's why it is so inexpensive.

for $40 -why not.. I'm glad I spent a little bit extra on mine. You'll miss not having any options. But if all you want is to be able to pull codes - go for it.

i mean if all you wanna do is read codes man, you should go for it. if you want it cleared, then that's a different story. cant you clear the codes by just unplugging the battery for a little while?

The light will go off but the code is still stored in the ECU and when you go for an inspection ( emission I am guessing) you will fail because of that stored code.

Will code reader erase stored codes? Also, I tried diconnecting the battery, but SES light stayed on... Thanks for the replies

Yes, code readers are the way to go if you want to clear/erase a stored DTC. This way, the car will adjust to the newly repaired sensor immediately. Disconnecting the battery to clear the SES light will only cause the ECU to go into "re-learn/not ready" mode. That is why if you try to get the car inspected, they run a test by the ECU... and, if the battery has been recently disconnected for a certain amount of time, they will get a reading like "re-learn/not ready". From this, they cannot get an accurate reading because the car has to be in "learned" mode in order to get the required readings/adjustments. This means, in order to get the car to "learned" mode, it has to be driven a number of drive cycles to get it where it has to be. Now, as far as clearing the SES (by using the battery disconnect method) for the 2k-2k1 models, a half hour or hour will suffice. For the 2k2-2k3 models, it will take about 36+ hours or so. So, in saying all of this, the best way to go in clearing/erasing a stored DTC, is to do it with a code reader so the ECU remains in the learned/ready mode and so that it responds to the repaired DTC immediately. Yeah, disconnecting the battery will still store the troubled code and will probably come back after the computer re-learns again if the sensor hasn't been repaired.

Purchased universal code reader for $39.99, and it works great. Highly recommended!!! Automatically turns off SES lights after codes are repeated three times.

Or you could fix the problem that's causing the code to be thrown?

What code are you getting? What year is your car? I was throwing a P0420 in my 2k max. Standard fix is replacing the cat, but in my case it was solved with a $95 ECM software update...which the dealer paid for under 8yr/80k warranty

So you may not need to change the sensors.
