Hawk Pad users step in please...
Hey all -
I recently installed brand new rotors (slotted/drilled) and new Hawk brake pads. They made a loud grinding sound for a while, but I assume that was for the break in period. Now that I have used it for a couple of days now (mainly highway driving) the grinding went away for the most part, but they still make a lot of noise compared to stock. Now I expected additional noise, but exactly how much? Also, for those in cold climates - how is your cold stopping power? It seems rather poor. Is it just me? Thanks guys

I don't have slotted or drilled rotors, but when I put on my Hawk ceramics I didn't notice a big difference in stopping power. There are directions on break in for the pads, so the noise shouldn't be from that if you did it properly. My pads don't make any noise at all. Hopefully someone with drilled/slotted rotors can speak up.

I have Hawks HPS all around on stock rotors. They squeaked for the first week or so but have been as quiet as OEM ever since. I had fun with the bedding in procedure! I assume you have Hawk HPS and not the Hawk racing pads.
The stopping power is great but they have to be warmed up. When it is cold outside, I'll keep my foot on the brake for about 5-7 seconds at the beginning of my drive which is sufficient to warm them up. The stopping power is not linear and actually increases as you slow down so with the same pressure on the brake pedal, the car decelerates good at 60mph, harder at 40mph and really grabs hard at <20mph.
The noise you are hearing might be the rotors but I can't really say since I've never had them on my car.

"Slow down! c'mon, brake!"
"Whoa! I'm getting too close!"
*whiplash* whoops! it stopped on a dime!
Okay, maybe not exactly like that, but you get the idea

To answer the OP's question, i have Hawk's up front on Powerslots. They don't make any grinding noise except when the car is creeping. Used to have problems with squeaking for a while but i immediately fixed that with some caliper grease.
When i still had my Axxis pads, those things would make a loud "jet engine" sound when decelerating from high speeds, so i'm sure the pad also has something to do with the sounds, not just the rotor.

i dont notice any cold climate braking problems. i do agree that they seem to need to be a little warmer to have a better bite when braking. i installed my hawks with brand new powerslot rotors 12k miles ago, and i just recently have had some noise on occasion.

Hawk HPS/ Powerslots all around with no noise or stopping issues. I followed the bed-in procedure just as the instructions called for. I waited till night to bed them in so no one was on the road. I have no noise issues at all and haven't had any from the beginning . I would say the rotors would likely be your problem, are they a good quality/ name brand? You get what you pay for, I learned that on my old car with some off brand rotors from ebay.

well thats answers a lot of my concerns! yeah, it seems to stop fine once they are warmed up, but they are not like my old pads where they just work and have even braking power - they get gradually stronger, and then just kick in. I am not sure if i like that! lol it makes me really nervous. but thanks for explaining to me how they respond. as for the noise, it has gone away for the most part - I get a slight grinding sound when I really get on the breaks, which I can live with.
thanks for all your responses!

Dude it's the rotors. I have drilled and slotted Brembos with Hawk pads and when I first got them put on the mechanic told me I was going to hear a loud whirring for a little because of the rotors. Once they were vroken in the noise went away. The lines were bled right and everything was installed right.
