Side marker lights issue.

Hey everybody, new maxima owner here with a few questions about the car (2000 Maxima SE). Since purchasing the car i've thought the side marker lights were reflectors because they never lit up, but after seeing pictures of other cars i learned otherwise. So, today i popped the bulbs out and only 1 of the 4 looks like it is burnt out. I checked both the under dash & engine compartment fuse boxes and didnt find any fuses to be burnt also.

My question is: What do you think could be causing them not to light up? I would imagine that they are not wired in series and all go out if 1 fails. I'm not a master tech, but i know my way around a car pretty well. Please shoot me any suggestions y'all might have. Thanks a million.

Chris

Ha, I thought the same thing. I also noticed the old owner had replaced the bulbs as well because he left pry marks while trying to get the lenses out, especially in the rear...I think that you are supposed to get to the rear bulbs from inside the trunk. The old owner sure screwed up my car, makes me never want to buy a used car. I looked the car over good enough, but when you get to working on it you notice the little things.

Just an FYI if anyone reads this asking how to remove those side marker reflectors to change the bulbs.

Use a butter knife (or similar blunt rounded edge object) and wrap the sucker in a paper towel. Then gently insert and pry toward you. They'll pop right off with no damage.

Patience in removing the cover is the secret. I had to replace both front and rear on drivers side.

When you guys replaced the side markers with the clear lenses, did you have to replace the bulbs with color ones? If so, where can I get a set of bulbs?

I got the clear side markers and tried bulbs and they didn't work well for me. SO 5 LED wedge bulbs are the way to go. I got mine at autolumination.com or you could try ebay.

Here are some pics:

The whole side marker is lit up nicely.

I got these a while ago. I believe you need the 194 or 168 bulbs (think they are the same) for the side markers. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I got the 5 LED wedge Matrix bulbs in amber and red.

got a major noob quesion, but since the OEM color scheme is red in the rear and amber in the front, if you change to clear lenses do have to use the same colors or can you go hyper white with blue all the way around? I live in nyc also!!

according to federal law...the front must reflect and light up amber and the rear must reflect and light up red.

Sooner, I think you are wrong! Have you ever seen the tail lights on the RX330?

I've definitely received a fix-it ticket for having super whites under my clears. In order to try and rectify the problem I placed red LED's in the rears, but left the super whites up front. They match the headlights so well...

Maybe a month later I was arrested for police impersonation. Apparently Infinitis look like cop cars when equiped with red and blue (I say white) sidemarkers.

Moral of the story... Red and amber LED's keep the cops at bay.

BTW, do all of your Maximas have this problem of all the markers going out if one bulb blows? I've had bulbs go out without effecting the others.

No way! I thought those were nozles for the RX's rocket boosters.

Maybe you did not catch the subtle hint of sarcasm that the animated icons were supposed to convey. Yes, we have all heard that argument before. I though it was humorus... Apparently I have no chance of being cool

My bad sooner, I misunderstood.

I hear you on that jkmay. And I thought I was safe here in good ol Fort Collins, CO. I lived in southern Cal for a few years and never got pulled over once with my illegal tint, all my clearing, and super white bulbs. Although I do use the chromed orange bulbs in the signals. It really bugs the **** out of me to see blue blinkers.

despite my smoked side markers...they look legal at night.
actually, im pretty sure they are legal since they light and reflect amber and red.

i did have clears on my 00 sterling mist...but i had the colored bulbs to draw less attention to them (never got pulled over)

Mine didnt - I just replaced the front driver and the rear passenger - the others worked just fine.

You guys miss the point of California police. Here we got profiling. If you look like you are trouble, and they see something they can give you ^#7 about, they'll stop you. I'm close to the legal limit of all-around tint (I did medium front, rear and rear window) but have never been stopped about it.

From my experience, it isn't just a simple "pop right off". On the rear, if you pry from the side closest to the doors, they will crack.

There is a plastic wedge/spring on the side closest to the bumper (rear bumper for the rear markers and front bumper for the front markers). Prying from that point, will pop them out easily with no damage. The side of the marker light closest to the doors has a hard plastic "hinge" with feet that hold onto the lip of the bumper.
