getting outta snow, only one gear in auto?

So last night was in Old town Virginia....got stuck in the snow/ice last night...i did the whole turning wheel stuff, reverse then drive thing evertyhing...

Then i got free cuz this car is awesome and when i was at the light....i let go of the brakes.....car didnt move....usually it would roll like any auto car would. I started to go, when it felt sooooo sluggish as if i was in a second gear on a manual trying to go.....

The car, i dont know which gear it is, think it was 2nd, stayed in that gear the whole rest of the night.....driving home and coming to stops...i switched gears manually and nothing happened ect.....

I woke up this morning to go to work, hopped in.....the car drove fine! the AT light flasshed a couple of times which never did before i never noticed.....but now its fine.....is there a safety mode that the auto's have or something? so it wouldnt peel out? i dont have a TC, and its ofcourse open dif....Anybody has explaination?

If you try to rock the car fwd and aft, you should hold the brakes at the end of the swing befor changing D or R. When the car is cold the trany will not lock the torque converter to help the trany warm up faster. When it gets up to temp it will revert to normal function.
If you find the car is still cool after a while you might want to confirme you have a cold weather thermostat!
I hope this helps.

Mine did the same thing...after I first got it, I turned off TC and did a huge burnout...it was like that after the burn out, real slow didn't wanna accelerate. Got home turned off, back on a/t check light flashed and has been fine since. Actually wait, not fine, I am having some transmission issues now..

When that does happen just turn the car off and restart it, it just needs to reset itself. I have had that happen to me a few times now in the snow and a couple of tire slipping times (huh hmmm burn outs)! All is well after restarting the car! Seems as if it just goes into a safety mode and waits to be reset by shutting the vehicle off and restarting it!

You all probably overheated the transmission and it went into fail-safe mode which means third gear only. You might have hurt the torque converter or worse and you should at least think about a fluid change.

It is the fail-safe mode, look in the owners manual under driving, it says something about "if the car is subjected to wheel spinning and then hard braking, the trans. will enter a fail-safe and be stuck in 3rd gear." it should re-set it self like yours, you only have a problem if it doesnt come out of that mode.
