What's the difference between a trouble code and a pending trouble code?

 

If a malfunction is detected on what the ECM is programmed to consider a "trip," it is stored as pending and the CEL will not illuminate. If the same malfunction is detected on the 2nd "trip," then it's stored and the CEL lights.
