Wheel almost fell off.......

This has happened once before when I had my 19's on. I started hearing knocking a few days ago when I was turning the steering wheel an inch or so to the left, off the gas, and cruising through a turn. My steering wheel vibrated a little, and I thought it was either my wheel bearing or my axle. I'd hear the same knock when applying a little pressure on the brakes as well. This was coming from the driver's side, and today I jacked it up to check it out. Did the wheel bearing test and grabbed a hold of the springs and tried to see if there was any play. Sat there for a minute and couldn't figure out what it was. Popped the center cap, and turned ever single lug nut with my finger. WTF?!?! This is twice that it has happened and on the same driver's side. I used a torque wrench to torque it down to the 90 lbs spec last time I had the wheel off. I might need to get new studs.

So next time you hear knocking, check your lug nuts as well. Good thing I found it before my wheel fell off. At least it wasn't a wheel bearing or an axle this time.

Wow, glad you caught that before something bad happened. I torque mine down to 87 as per the manual. Yeah, check your studs and nuts.

Since it's happened on the same one twice, I'm probably going to end up doing that.

It is stock lugs and studs as well.

I actually had the center hub nut come waaayyyy loose a couple months ago......sketchy.

Are you sure that:
1. the seat (base) of the lug nuts you use are the same as the seat on the wheel and
2. there is no lubrication on the lugs (grease, etc)?

Might sound stupid but maybe your torque wrench is out of calibration? time for a new one? Just a thought....

Or maybe people are trying to steal your rims....haha this happened to my friend on his max...i guess they saw us walking back to the car before they could get any of the wheels off...cause they left 2 of the wheels almost off...we didnt know untill we heard the same noises your mentioning....Come to think of it...

Irish- The seat of the lugs should be the same as the seat of the wheels because they're currently stock anniversary edition rims. I don't think there is any type of lubrication on the studs/lugs, but I need to verify that.

XeroX- I very well could be that the torque wrench was out of calibration, since it was a friend's that I used, but it was also used on the remainder wheels at the same time, and they are all tight.

When I get a chance, I'm probably going to get new studs and bolts once I get the G wheels on, and see how that does.

I hear ya irish, my front driver side axle nut had came loose 2x before, had no idea how the hell that would be able to come loose though, bad bearings possibly!

I'm no expert on the matter, but any source of vibration could help rattle your lugs loose...a quick check to eliminate a potential source of the problem would be to make sure you hubcentric ring is still in place on that wheel. I've never heard of this happening to anyone, it's just my $.02

wow, this seems fishy as hell. i've driven cars for years without ever removing the wheels and when i do, the lugs are just as tight as when i put them on. time to get wheel locks.

I know how you feel man. In my 89, I had so many problems with lug nuts getting rusted and old and breaking off. I was on 4 for a bit and then 2 broke off going over the 520 floating bridge (2 lane freeway with no side road) and my wheel was shaking so bad and I thought I was gonna get owned and get stuck, but I barely made it off the bridge and pulled over and had to wait for a toe truck.....actually I remember having to wait for 2. I specifically told me I need a flat bed because my car was too low and plus the kit and they sent me the traditional and finally 2 hours later, they brought me a flat bed. It's definitly a scary feeling feeling the knocking and shaking. Portable DVD player ftw though.

holy crap dude...bad move. You better replace all your lugs, probably even your hub. And before anyone tries to say that it's just the aspect of your camera that's making the holes look ovalized, move your monitor around until you can see down into the top right counterbore.

The wheel is toast. Replace the wheel and all the studs. The hub being made out of pretty good stuff (steel) has probably "survived". Remove any Al "pickup" off the hub face when you remove the old studs.
