I'm looking to clear out my tail lights and make the stop light clear like the turn signal and then tint them to look like the SE lights on the 2001s any thoughts on how to do this...

that would be illegal
but if you still wanted to do it, you would have to buy all clear tailights since you cant "clear" them.
all the info is on here...you just need to find it.

I would have to agree with what Sooner said too. If you are trying to achieve an all clear, but slightly tinted look then you are gonna have a problem with law enforcement. It would be easier to buy the 00/01 SE tail lights and legal too. As for a clear third brake light I don't anticipate that should be a problem as long as you put a red bulb or LED in it.

here in florida there is no inspection and people get away with much worse on their cars then cleared taillights...which is not a good thing

Yes, they are illegal. Even if you painted the top portion red, the reflector will not reflect red, thus also illegal.

If you have the clear lights, all you have to do is put a small piece if reflective (red) tape on the bumper or the lights so it stays legal.

yes, those are illegal.
lack of inspection or other people getting away with it doesnt make it legal.

tailights must light AND REFLECT red

Absolutely. Those light in the picture are illegal. They are non-compliant with FMVSS 108. The reflector in the pic is clear. It MUST be red. Although MaximaPolak has a point and I am wandering if you would still run into trouble if you added a reflector on the rear bumber like the Madza 6 or Mazda 3's. I am sure most of us have seen some cars with a similar set-up like the the Mazda's I mentioned above and yes some of them have all clear tails right from the factory (like it or not) or red tails without the reflectors built into the tails which is why they need that reflector on the bumper.

Them new BMW come stock with cleared tails and i think they have a red reflector. Can't we just get all clear tails and put a red bulb, which then reflects red?

Ebay used to sell the all clear ones (without the black on the outside), does anyone know where I can get those?

Talking about illegal, having clear rear side markers which lights up white is illegal, but a lot of us have it. Putting Hids on headlights not designed for them are illegal, but most cops don't give you tickets for them. Maybe if you got caught for speeding, then they'll give you additional tickets for those stuff, or if they're bored =).

clear sidmarkers are VERY different than clear tailights. clear tailights are VERY unsafe for the driver and a car behind him.

i dont know why this is always an argument since they are also ugly as hell

I have the clears.... no problems with the law. The only think I don't like, is the chrome bulbs aren't very bright. I tried LED bulbs... but you couldn't see them very well throughout the day.

You see the problem is the fact that the reflectors in the all clear tails is white and not red. In addition even if you try to mimic a set-up like the Lexus RX 330 with the all clear tails notice that there is red reflector on the rear bumber of this car which then makes it legal. And of course the clear lights have the proper color bulbs inside. Bottom line is if the car was made that way from the factory then chances are you won't be pulled over. If you modify it, then some cops will spot that right away just like another Maxima driver will. And of course there are the few that will put a clear bulb in the blinkers instead of the amber which only draw more attention with the clear tail set-up. My guess is, even if you go with the all clear set-up and try to make it legal, with reflectors on bumper, the right color bulb etc you still might run into a problem.

Oh and the clear side markers are 100% illegal too.

Sooner I think I saw that coming too. In fact this discussion has come up before, but we have to still try to steer them in the right direction.

This topic has been beaten to death a million times already.
They are illegal. If you want to take the chance that is up to you. If you want to put fugly red reflective tape on your bumper that is also your choice.

im pretty sure that in mass ive been told by cops that any modification to lights is ilegal. that would make about 90% of the org ilegal. im not worried about my lights being unsafe or someone not seeing me so i was wondering if it would draw unwanted attention by police?

An interesting note on that Lexus and a bit off the topic. In North America those red reflectors on the bumper of the RX are reflectors only facing the rear with another side facing reflector and marking light. I have seen the RX's in the UK with a rear facing fog light built into the reflectors. The RX's here don't have that feature. Still the bottom line is the RX is legal and the mod that the person who started this thread if thinking of doing is not.
