I feel silly, but I can't find the connector for the OBD scanner, me and the guy from the auto parts store both spent about 15 minutes looking around under the steering wheel column. That's where the haynes manual was pointing us, but of course the picture in the manual was for a different year so it didn't help.

I also have the shop manual in PDF format, but the OBD section doesn't show where to plug the scanner (I guess it assumes no one is this stupid)

 

under dash to the left of the steering wheel (where your left knee would be when sitting)

Look for a white plastic connector under the dash (like soonerfan stated) - gotta keep you head down and look up.

 

ive never seen a cap on any maxima...just the black piece with all the pin holes
