Is this electrical grease or sludge??

Headlight is flickering.. I just checked the bulb connector and it has this brownish and white/cream sludge/gunk in it... I cleaned portion of it then I realized it could've been ELECTRICAL GREASE.

After cleaning portion of it, the connector to the bulb feels loose, thats why I suspect it is required grease.

Can someone confirm? Pictures below.

If it is grease, I guess I need to clean it and re-grease, right? If it is NOT grease, how can I stop the flickering?

Thanks in advance!

ummmm Notice the red wire with the burned insulation? There should be no grease on the headlight connectors! Suggest you disconnect the negative battery terminal and clean that grease off.

You've got melted plastic and burnt wires. What more needs to be explained. It's right there in the pictures you took. That's why your getting the flickering. Poor contacts and too much freaking electrlytic grease. Or whatever the hell it's called.

You shouldn't need any die-electric grease on your headlight harness at all. Snip and replace, and please, next time resize your pictures. Due to the sheer size of this picture I thought it was part of a fusebox, even when maximized onto dual 19's.

Those wires are burned. You often see it if you are using aftermarket bulbs (I had this happen to me) since they pull more current than the wires can handle.

What bulbs are you using?

Extended desktop. Seriously, did you really ask that question? The image was maximized to the width of two screens.

You should ALWAYS have dielectric grease on the contacts inside your headlight harness. Yes, even that much is not a big deal. the stuff does not conduct electricity (this the reason it is called dielectric. go look it up if you don't know what it means).

Its purpose is to keep water out of the headlight harness in the event you get in a nasty downpour or hit a large puddle and flood the engine bay with water. if the connector gets water inside it, it can cause the connectors to fry and blow fuses and other nasty stuff. Nissan puts the grease in there to keep the water out. (if it's full of something that repels water, it can't get in, right?)

I'm going to assume you've got some high-wattage bulbs, which is the reason the contacts are fried. Seen it many, many times. go buy a high quality aftermarket headlight harness with external relays and large gauge wiring from the battery. you may also need to replace the car's plug as well depending on the new harness kit that you buy. some just plug in to the old harnesses, and others are hardwired. Either way, you can buy new headlight connectors at the parts store for about $5.

What bulbs are you using?

I had the regular sylvanias and now I bought the Sylvanias Siverstar or whatever they are called... the ones a notch better than the CoolBlue.

What style/size bulbs are these?

I was always confused about these headlight bulbs styles.. I am not even sure which bulbs our cars use...

Thanks again!

silverstars will not cause this problem.
it was probably just a bad connection that burned the wires.

as far as replacing the connector

cost around $5. the dealership wanted $60 for the connector and about 10 feet of wires.

Both junkyards around me didnt have any 00-01 Maximas.

I am trying to get the connector from NAPA/Pepboys/Autzone or whatever place sells them....

BUT.. I am not sure what TYPE of connector our cars use.... I do know they are not HID or Xenon (are these the same?) and I suspect they are H3 but I am not sure. By the way, what are H3s, H4s, etc? A type of bulb?

How do I find bulb connector?

cut off the bad connector and take it to the store
H3, H4 ets are bulbs. the different numbers are for size, connections, etc.
your headlight is H4 (also called 9003)
