I am just curious about how many 5th gen owners have purchased the Nissan service plus Silver Extended warranty plan. I received a form in the mail the other day and am now thinking about signing up, especially because they are extending me a 12 month interest free period to pay off the plan. (100 bucks a month w/interest free credit is not bad). The cost of the plan that I am interested in is around $1250 for 6months or 75,000 miles, whichever comes first. The plan covers more than 2000 parts, with a $50 deductable for each service visit (Nissan pays the rest). I didn't think much about it at the time of purchase, but now that I see that it covers numerous items like power windows (and we do have 4 of them), power door locks, air conditioning components, etc., I am beginning to think this sounds like a worthwhile investment. I have never had any experiece with these plans before, and any insight shared would be much appreciated.

Based on what you read here, it's probably money in the toilet

I was wondering whether or not I should do this too,
but based on what you read here, it seems like getting
a dealership to honor a warantee is next to impossible.

I've yet to read one positive thing about Nissan
dealerships wrt to warantee work. Anyone care to
volunteer anything?

My last vehicle was a '94 Pathfinder, and they are notorious for warping exhaust manifolds and snapping the manifold studs. My dealer replaced the manifold and the broken studs under the extended warranty without any problems.

So there's one positive experience anyway!

mixed bag..

first off... you have to fight for a rental car (I have gold). they make it pretty hard to get. you don't get any better treatment over just any schmoe walking in.

powertrain is warrantied to 5yr/60K standard. as far as all the 'little things', most of them can be found on the exclusion list. Its probably not worth it.. but I have them (gold) on both cars because I'm obsessive that way. I've thought about cashing out of it a few times, but I probably wont.

Not Worth It !

My opinion is that it isn't worth it. I purchased the plan when I signed up for my 3yr lease. After checking into it, I found that most of your common things, i.e. brakes, tires, etc., things that more than likely will wear-out over the first 3yrs - aren't covered. I was told at the time of lease signing, that ALL normal wear-and-tear items are covered and they are not. It's only like $10 extra per month, so it's not that bad on the wallet, but it just seems to be another way for Nissan to suck the $$$$$ out of ya.

When I purchased my car, I bought the silver plan. They sold it to me for $999. 6 years, 150K miles, no deductible. I bet if you call Nissan HQ or visit a dealership, they will sell it cheaper. The dealer cost for my plan was $999 (finance guy showed me the book with all costs to prove it to me). I think it's a good buy, especially if you are kinda hard on your car and are planning on keeping it after the basic 3yr/36K warranty.

I bought a gold 6year/100K mile policy with a $50 detuctible. I paid $1,125 for it, and it came with 20 free oil changes from the dealer. (I haven't gotten the free oil change booklet yet, thanks for the reminder.)

*Don't* think you have to pay retail for these things. Did you pay retail for your car?

I tend to keep my cars for a long time, and I have yet to lose money on a policy. They've *always* paid for themselves. It isn't what breaks within 36K miles, but what breaks after 60K miles...

Should you get it? Depends on whether you think you're going to have two major repair jobs (or one REALLY BIG one) on your car within the policy period. Roll the dice...

Mine usually comes up craps...
