I happen to be review the TSB on http://www.nhtsa.com and I saw that many 2k Maximas exhibit "...A LOUD, LOW FREQUENCY GROAN NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT BRAKES DURING STOPPING. *TT"
Apparently a problem with the front brakes and the hydraulics. Any word on what the procedure on this is?
It is service bulletin #NTB00016. Anyone else have this problem? i noticed it on mine but when I asked my dealer originally he just said he thought it was the type of brake pads...well I will be revisiting the dealer.

its basically a design thing from 4th gens...

they have been dealing with it for years. its caused by the caliper not fully releasing after braking. Ask the 4th geners what the dealer does for this. I think the dealers ran them around too.. you might have to show them the TSB.

So people who have 5th Gen are not affected with this problem or are they?

I have a 5th gen...

and my car does it occasionally...not always...it seems that if I brake hard once then apply my brakes later it makes the noise...or sometimes it does it when the ground is wet. Sounds like you need new brakes pads but you don't.

Yeah I think I get some noise when I brake.

Oh maybe it's the road feel?? I have 17" wheels and you can feel how the road noise transfers into the cabin.

17" here too...

I seriously doubt its road noise...this is pretty loud. You can definately feel the grind when you brake...especially at slower speeds(like 20mph) It is really wierd...Im trying to get more info on it.

under hard, repetitive braking, our brakes will make that groan/grinding noise. sounds like the hydraulic is pretty weak, can't really handle the repetitive braking....something like that. I'm sure a lot of 5th gen people who drives their car hard might have experienced this. My dealer didn't do **** when i brought this up...

This is a pretty serious issue though...

at least safety wise I would imagine...what happens if the hydraulic fails or brakes in the midst of breaking? Loss of control might be a concern right? There is a service bulletin on the National Highway Safety website about the hydraulic...is there any way to find out if there is a remedy on it? Think i should log complaint with the NHTSA so they will hopefully look further into it?

I know I am pretty hard on my car but I have been hard on ALL my cars and never have I ever had this problem.

It can very well be........in my opinion, brake is one of the WEAKEST part from Nissan cars...

I've had 15,000 miles on the car and lucky me i don't think i have the warped rotor yet....but I do sympathize those 2k owners who have the problem. For the kind of price we pay and this kind of problem we get, it just sucks.

Is there any warranty on the rotor ??? Anybody know?

Kev how many miles did your rotor got warped ?

I didn't get my rotors replaced yet... yes, they gave me plenty of that (i.e. you changed your suspension so that messed up your rotors).

I recently had a rattling/clunking noise from what I thought was my right front strut during heavy braking (7k miles - 2k). I thought it was the TSB for the strut. Turns out that it had something to do with the brakes (different TSB). The service adviser was a moron and really couldn't explain the problem to me. All he could tell me is that they resurfaced the rotors and replaced the pads (couldn't tell me what the problem was - something about a bolt and that they had to get the parts from another shop and that the tech guy had seen this problem before was all I could get out of him). Unfortunately, the tech guy who did the work had already had left for the day.

I think this is different from the grinding noise that I have on my 96. That is caused by using non-oem pads. Put the oems on and it goes away.

I'll be going in for service next week and I think my car is starting to develope a slight noise in braking too. Guess I'll wait and see how things turn up.

If indeed my car has warped rotor, will it be covered under warranty??? Does anybody know? (currently 15K miles)

I too have a 2000 Maxima-GLE- that has exhibited the same low frequency sound-almost like a gravel crunching noise-on several occasions. Both happened after 4 or 5 hr road trips when stopping for the light after exiting the freeway. My dealer told me quote, "You aren't keeping the wheels dust free Mrs. Hensley".
